One of the benefits of living in a condo in the heart of the city.. At any given time at least one neighbor has a good connection. Time Warner sucks..

im assuming that your on windows.. to set DHCP select the network icon and click the property field with the right key on your mouse. Then you can select the Local Area Connection icon and click the property field with the right key on your mouse.Now you can select the TCP/IP icon and click the property key.then select the check boxes for obtain IP address automatically and obtain DNS server address automatically.. then click ok... let me know if your on linux or mac ...
 
Thanks for the effort but it just won't work for me.

I hate this internet!! We've been stuck with this IP for 2 years and Time Warner's exact words were "it's impossible for give you a new IP".

lol I'm pretty much just screwed when it comes to Torrents.

Ok.. let me start from the beginning. When they first installed our service.. they sent the fattest most disgusting guy out who stole some of our mints when he installed the cable. When he installed the cables, he had to run split lines or something and forgot to hook the cables up.. at least he says.

Let's travel forward in time now a few months.. and now our internet just randomly turns off when ever it feels like it, and it's having some serious hella lagging problems lately. Aside from that, I upload torrents but since I have a static IP this is a pain. So I called them asking if it was possible to reset an IP.. and this is what I got

One Guy: Turn your modem off for 15 seconds
Another Guy: Type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew and your IP should be new.
And Yet Another Guy: It takes 60 seconds for a static IP to reset.

So now I'm on the phone with them again .. (been on hold for 1 hour now) and I was going to ask if it was possible to purchase or switch to a Dynamic IP Address or if there was any way to change our account into this. Since we live in an actual city area, I figured it was possible but I don't know.

I pity who ever answers this phone.. I called our local town office and they had no idea what I was talking about so he had to transfer me to a higher level of technical support.

I've had Time Warner 4 different times in 4 different places when I moved around a lot.. and usually the speed is blazing fast and I never have any problems.. but ever since I got time Warner in Urbana, Ohio I've had nothing but problems with about the biggest dumb asses working their tech support!

I supposed I've been lucky as well. I have Comcast, and very rarely have any problems. If/when I do, they're usually resolved within an hour or two.

I also have an AT&T DSL connection, which also seems to run flawlessly.
 
At least you guys can get a cable connection - where I live in the moluntains the best I can do is ADSL - not even ADSL2 because the exchange hasn't been upgraded. I can't even get a decent wireless connection because I am 50m on the wrong side of the hill - I have literally at times had to sit in my car at the end of my street to get a wireless connection on the laptop.
 
What type of internet do I need to purchase if I want something that will reset the IP every time I re-start the modem or do the ipconfig renew and release thing?

Is there only a certain type of internet that does this or would I have to check with the ISP company to know for sure?

I have my Laptop hooked up at my mom's house with Embarq DSL (they're about as bright as Time Warner)

I got four different technicians, I chatted with 4 different people just to be safe and they all gave me different answers on how often our IP resets at my old house.

*sigh* I swear.. there are no companies hiring people who know what they're talking about anymore when it comes to tech support.

DSL typically has dynamic IP addresses. You usually have to request a static IP with DSL. Go to att.com and check out their DSL packages. I have DSL lite and it works fine for regular web surfing, and it's only $20/month with no contracts. I get a new IP everytime I disable/enable the USB network adapter (turns the modem on/off).
 
Time warner suck ass here in north dallas. I been having the same issue where they say my speeds are ok . . .ie 2mb when I am on a 10mb package. Everytime I run a tracert my first hop always times out. They cant get it through their head untill I bitch then they say that they will fix it and I have been having this same issue for a month now. Arg, I am in an area that I can only get internet through time warner(road runner) :(
 
Wait I'm confused..

Is it Dynamic or Static that changes typically every time the modem is reset? I thought that was a Dynamic IP

Do you know what I find absolutely funny?

Call your tech support several times and make sure you get different people and ask the same question. For example.. my question for my mom's internet connection was, "How often does the IP Address change?"

#1 - "every 15 minutes"
#2 - "every hour"
#3 - "once every 2 weeks"

My local (Time Warner) company. "How can I change my IP Address?"

#1 - Turn off the modem for 15 seconds
#2 - Type in command ipconfig /release and /renew and turn off your modem for 1 minute
#3 - We can't give you a new IP it's impossible
I'm not kidding.. I had someone tell me that it was impossible to obtain a new IP nor could they give me one.

Just a few examples of different responses I've gotten.
 
I think it's impossible, without changing your modem's mac address. Even then, I've heard of instances where it wouldn't work, because you'd have to call up the cable company and give them the new mac address...
 
I am stuck with dsl. Comcast is here but i had major problems with them. They set up my service and 5 days later they called me and told me I was uploading to much, I had to upgrade my service to a commercial package. My reply was " I haven't moved into that house yet. How could I be uploading enough to have to upgrade? All you have done is run the wires to the house and put in the wall jacks."

I had not moved in yet I was getting all of my utilities on and my stuff all moved and unpacked. I was moving in the following day. School was out for my kids. So when I explained this to comcast they wouldn't budge and said that I had to upgrade. So I dropped them and picked up Verizone dsl. Hell I even went with satellite tv for cable lol

So yes comcast sucks here too.

Yep, I've downloaded that Tool, changed the Mac.. did the whole Tutorial and it just doesn't work for me.

I unplugged my room mate's computer so I was the only one connected to see if that was the problem but it just didn't work for me :P
 
I've got AT&T and they've been good so far. No problems as of now.

What package did you get and can you change your IP every time you re-set the modem?
 
Well, the package I'm looking at is $35/monthly it's their fastest high speed option.

If you can change your IP by just re-setting the modem I will call this POS ISP right now and shut it off and switch to ATT.
