Hey BHW?ers, this is my first public contribution, although I have been a member for a few months. Hope it is good for those who are active on KW research, especially fellow noobs.

OK, this one is about KW research and the accuracy of Google KW Tool. I noticed something really awkward with my research results for a niche that I am trying to be active in with video marketing, and here it goes:

? Did some extensive KW research on the niche through Market Samurai, as some of use suspected, it does give miss-leading results sometimes. I think it depends on the connection quality, as sometime it times out (I think) and gives whatever results it could fetch, even if it is complete. It is still very good with SEO competition analysis, though. So, I took matters into Google KW Tool?s own hands.

? Got some lucrative KW?s for the niche, but noticed that a couple of KW?s are ?insanely? popular. In fact they are getting 3 Billion+ (with a ?B?) monthly global searches. So, I thought I have a golden opportunity there. This means that there are 100 Million+ searchers every single day for each KW. So, I would be very happy if I rank for any of those KW?s and get whatever chunk of this traffic I end up with. Hey, if you have a couple of hundred million eyeballs going somewhere, that is going to be above and beyond what anyone can expected for any laser-targeted micro-niche KW regardless of its monetization-potential. Think about it, why do they advertise for cars at a football match? It is not like you will walk out of the stadium, pass by the showroom, and go buy a car, right?

? What is more, most of them were Long Tail KW?s. So, it is not something like searching for ?weather? for example. It is more like ?what is the weather like today?. You get the idea. The only exception is that instead of ?weather? my KW?s were related to a certain brand.

? So, I decided to take this to the extreme and re-ran searches again and again for all KW?s that I can think of related to that niche. Surprisingly, every time, I got new KW?s which were showing 3 billion+ searches in that niche. At the end, I got around 30 (Thirty) KW?s which got 3 Billion+ for global monthly searches each!

? What kept me excited is that some of these KW?s are showing $1+ average CPC. Although I didn?t see a lot of ads on the first page, those KW?s contained a certain brand name, which explains why no one can purchase Adwords traffic for them. Still, my strategy was to build and SEO a video for them, and stay safe from the competition in the same time.

? Checked with Google Insights, and made sure that the traffic is consistent, close to the 100 mark, and volume was built up gradually over a few years (no temporary surges). Checked traffic sources, and found some with US intensive, and others with from various distributions from all around the world. That made me more confident that these are genuine KW?s with high potential.

? Did Market Samurai for SEO competition, and was amazed most KW?s were basically open and I can probably kick some ass on page 1 with some of the stuff I learned here on BHW.

? Then, and this what endlessly raised an eyebrow, I made a simple formula on XL based on revenue expectations and ranking with a video for positions 8-9 (worse-case scenario) and found out that I could be making $110K/day. (Yeah, right!)

Did someone see what was wrong with this picture?

Well, it was a tiny mistake, but it cost me over 3 weeks of work. Google KW Tool?s numbers were correct (or so I think, unless someone gives another explanation), but they were very misleading. Here is how I found out:
I went back and added up the potential number of visitors for all these KW?s + the others that don?t have potential (but are still displaying +3 billion each) and found out that basically our friends at Google are telling us that there are over 3.5 Billion people searching for the same 30 KW?s (mostly longtail) EACH SINGLE DAY, all within the same niche, and related to one brand! So, I asked myself: how many internet users are there in the world today? And if they are all searching for these 30 KW?s, who?s searching for all the other KW?s in all other niches?

That?s where I found out that I forgot to examine and check the ?Phrase? and [Exact] check boxes (for fellow noobs, they show on the left of G. KW Tools? page AFTER you run your first search there). Imagine after checking them, the ones showing 3 Billion went down to something around 167 searches/month! Some were even getting 46 searches/month.

That is it. That?s my story. However, this experience left me with a problem: everyone keeps on talking about Broad Monthly Searches as the standard for KW research. And OK, I understand Broad Match reflects the long term view of how google ranks KW?s, compared to Phrase & Exact which are for the shorter run. So, must we blame Google for results like this? I mean when we see results dropping from 3 Billion to 46 (regardless of what their theory is for why they drop that much) that should be labeled as misleading, shouldn?t it?

In any case, I would appreciate it if you guys let me know your thoughts on what to use as an indication of the actual organic traffic that you?ll get as you go through the KW research...

Omg, who said broad match is the main metric?????
Defiitely always check exact searches, since that is the number you will get when you rank for THAT keyword, sorry mate but that is a very noobishnove not to check exact searches for a 3 billion keyword

By everybody, I mean those who teach SEO. Take Market Samurai dojo videos, for example. They clearly say that Broad is the best metric because it shows you a ‘crystal glass' into how google will rank your site in the future as you gain more authority by time. They add that Exact is for the short term & Phrase is for medium term. I heard the same talk in other places as well.
