Instagram Threads is not the only communication application with that name. Downloads of its namesake Threads have also exploded.

When Meta chose the name Threads for its Twitter challenger, it clearly wasn't in an attempt to create something unique—the name is as non-unique as the service itself. In fact, Instagram itself had another application called Threads a few years ago that was later shut down, but Threads is also the name of a completely different application and service.

Threads (from Threads Inc) is confusingly also for text and image communication, but is a challenger and replacement to Slack and Teams instead of Twitter. It was already released in 2019 and owns the domain "threads.com", where it has now placed a notice that it has no connection with Instagram.

Tech Crunch reports that downloads of Threads from the App Store exploded after Instagram's launch of Threads, landing at around 880,000 copies in the July 6-12 period, up from the usual "few," according to statistics from Data AI. Globally, it landed at number 52 on the App Store chart, but in several European countries it entered the top 10 list.

Seems like Zuc sux at naming.

I posted this other day that this traffic is bound to benefit them : https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/meta-threads.1511729/post-16564226

facebook bought too fb.com = fb [Ctrl][Enter] who knows the price for this domain

Facebook will probably buy them. lol

Plot twist
He purchased a stake in the original company before doing own launch of threads.

That moment when your domain name is worth more to someone else, than your entire company... can be early retirement $$$ for them.

Doesn't help FB just made it more expensive to purchase for themselves.

Why would they, especially at this point? The other Threads raised a $10 million series A in 2019, so it probably would've been too expensive for Facebook to acquire a .com just for a landing page.

The domain name doesn't mean anything.150 million people already found their way to the official app. Of the 880k that accidentally downloaded (0.58%), the majority will uninstall or won't use it.

the .com of threads are all own by Zuck, they know what they doing. If it was me I would do the same, first is buy out the company, then let it die, use only useful leftover like domain sound good.

I would say Instagram popularity gave threads an unexpected boost. I still prefer Twitter and I would choose it a hundred times over threads.

Wait till peoples who downloaded it by mistake thinking it's IG thread start uninstalling it, their retention rate will get f** and they will be sent to bottom.
As I said on my other thread a good chunk of this traffic will be those professionals who are looking for alternative to twitter.

And for professionals a productivity tool that claims to be a better or upgraded version of slack will be something interesting.

So, I think a good part of that traffic should convert.

Now it's upto them how they maintain the quality of their app to retain this accidental traffic as paying customers.
