Instagram Threads is not the only communication application with that name. Downloads of its namesake Threads have also exploded.
When Meta chose the name Threads for its Twitter challenger, it clearly wasn't in an attempt to create something unique—the name is as non-unique as the service itself. In fact, Instagram itself had another application called Threads a few years ago that was later shut down, but Threads is also the name of a completely different application and service.
Threads (from Threads Inc) is confusingly also for text and image communication, but is a challenger and replacement to Slack and Teams instead of Twitter. It was already released in 2019 and owns the domain "threads.com", where it has now placed a notice that it has no connection with Instagram.
Tech Crunch reports that downloads of Threads from the App Store exploded after Instagram's launch of Threads, landing at around 880,000 copies in the July 6-12 period, up from the usual "few," according to statistics from Data AI. Globally, it landed at number 52 on the App Store chart, but in several European countries it entered the top 10 list.
Seems like Zuc sux at naming.
