...do customers just have to visit an affilaite site (but not necessarily click the affiliate link) for the affiliate to get a commisson (if the customer ends up buying the product by visiting the vendors site directly afterwards) or do they actually have to click a link on the affiliate site?

they have to click so it installs the aff id into the cookie ... impressions doesnt count

Most of the time, the customer has to click on the link.
