This is how I do my keyword research

Hey ho.

No intro. Let's go.

1. Finding the niche and keyword

This can be tricky part. I simply decide - do I wanna go Amazon, CB, CPA or what ever you work with. This time I decided to go with Amazon. Head over to http://www.amazon.com/ and go by department. I think that I will be able to find a good niche inside appliances here: http://www.amazon.com/Appliances/b/ref=nav_shopall_ha?ie=UTF8&node=2619525011



Pick something that you like or if you're not gonna write content, just go in some order and I'm sure you will find some hidden gems in there. I was looking and looking and I found something in the Coffee & Expresso category.



Now, from here we can do some more work and narrow down our search. I thought that drip coffee makers could be a good niche and I was partially right. I checked GKT and that phrase has over 18 000 searches per month. Now, I don't wanna target that, I would like to target something like: best drip coffee makers or drip coffee makers review. Soon enough, I stumbled upon the "best drip coffee maker" and it has over 5000 searches per month.



Now, that is something I like. Now that I know it has decent searches per month, I will proceed and do the keyword research.

2. Analysis

First of all, I just do a simple Google search for my soon-to-be targeted keyword. I'm looking for the number of results.



Under a million results? Oooooh boy! I do like this very, very much. This keyword looks really promising for me. Let's keep digging. Let's check the trends:



Well, this is interesting. Usually, I ignore the latest results and I go by the previous one because they only have partial data and who knows when will they update. So, 73, trend is good, I like it! Move on!

Now I do "intitle:best drip coffee maker"



Is this real life? 462 results? Alright, I'm gonna take this. So far so good. Now let's do this "inurl:best drip coffee maker"



Still can't believe that there is not that many results for this.

So far, I'm liking EVERYTHING about this keyword. Now I enter my keyword in Traffic Travis (free tool) and while I wait, I enter my keyword in Long Tail Pro. Here are the results:



I like the metrics. Should not be hard to outrank most of them. Next, Traffic Travis is done:



All I need to know. Relatively easy. I like it. Now, just because I can, I use Keyword reveler and check the metrics and the difficulty again:



35 - moderate competition. The metrics checks out. Looks like it should be a good keyword after all. (yes, you can get pretty much everything you need in Keyword reveler, but since I only have free account there I only do it when I have everything I need)

3. Building a website and ranking

Do you suggest building quality/authority like sites for amazon or automated link building - more churn and burn 'structure'?

What tools do you guys use /services you recommend for amazon?

Yes, building quality for sure. If there is no authority website or if there is one and you think you can outrank it, go for it. I was never a fan of burn and churn.

Tools? Just regular tools I use for any website I make. The ones listed above and GSA SER, RankerX... Regular SEO tools!

Why did you hide the keyword if you used the same one? I can tell just by the length of the keyword that those are not the same ones. But looks like you got some great keywords as well! Go for it!

Yeah man, you definitely didn't use the same keyword so that's why results are not the same. Not only that your keyword is shorter in your stats (that's why I'm guessing it's different), but domains .net AND .org are available in your stats. In my research only .net is available.

So, you used different keywords and you different results.

I bet u 50$ u will have a hard time ranking above the cnet page and keep ur spot. Don't rely only on tools when doing KR use common sense too. Also if ur aff link will be amazon related i doubt u will rank above those amazon pages. PM if u can prove me wrong and want my 50$.

Yeah, results may be different based on the location. Long Tail Pro probably did a search with your default search engine which could be any Google search engine, probably your local one. Keyword reveler is cloud based and they probably searched with google.com. That's why your probably see different results. They are not that different actually. That's a still pretty good keyword I would say based on the images you provided.

Based on my experience, my knowledge and my budget I believe that I would have no problems ranking my site if I was about to go in that niche. And no thanks, just keep those $50. Not here to prove myself to anyone, just trying to help out by sharing some of my knowledge and experience.

This is only half of the story. The other half, the most important one, is analyzing the backlink profile of each competitor in the top 10. Those tools you mentioned won't give you any info about hidden PBN-s, backlink quality, etc.. of each domain. You need to dig deeper than that to ensure a profitable SEO campaign for your selected keywords!
