While exact-match domains (EMDs) and partial-match domains (PMDs) still hold some ranking power (although not nearly as much as they did in the past), registering a new domain or creating a new sub-domain would be tedious work for every article. This guide is meant more for people trying to build a blog under 1 brand name (e.g., www.Josephsuperblog.com) so that they can rank their articles.What about keyword in the domain ?
But yes, you can certainly use EMDs and PMDs if you want.

Onpage SEO is indeed powerful, it's just that most IM people want to see quicker bottom line results in terms of traffic, and feel backlinks rank them faster. The tip on re-optimizing or "rehabbing" pages to rank them for different words will help a lot of people.

This is what I've been wondering too, as i have problems "ranking" in top 300 with new domains. I have a 2 month old website that BARELY makes it to top 100-200 for 25 keywords, after i built a couple of links. I don't know if you should follow in my competitor's steps, as they are very over-optimized for their keywords, but apparently it works wonders for them (even with crappy links).
Also, about categories and tags, does gogle really care about them? I see my competitors have pumped up sites with 50-60 indexed pages, of which only 20 are actual articles, the rest being categories, tags, archives, and whatever pages WordPress spits by default. Does that really help?

I'll try to answer both of your questions in this post.
1. Is it important to have a good domain authority and age for your internal pages to rank without seo?
I've never had any issues with the age of a page/post or its ability to rank. Domain authority and age, on the other hand, is a different story. I've had some sites with newly registered domains (under 3 months old) rank well for extremely low competition keywords (with even fewer people searching them each month) and I've had other sites rank poorly (although I usually assume that when I have poor rankings for a page, that I chose a bad keyword). If you're having trouble ranking, I suggest looking for long-tail keywords that receive 20-100 searches per month and then gradually work your way up to more competitive keywords.
2. Also, about categories and tags, does google really care about them?
I usually create categories and tags to help organise my content for my readers (in the case of tags, I sometimes use it to add my keyword in then article 1 more time), and categorising them often helps with my internal link structure (by providing the web crawlers with additional ways to access each page). So, even if categories and tags don't have direct SEO benefits, they can have indirect SEO benefits.
