The Ultimate Amazon Thread Mark 2 - Q/A - Good/Bad

Now i dont get it. Why most of you guys have this 'insane' habit to buy as many domains as you can? Its obvious that more sites means more work and less quality, cus you can't focus like you should. I have 2 blogs, no more than that and i still dont have enough time to deal with both of them (i bank from these blog a lot of $$$$). Why not focus on 1 main website/blog and expand it? Just my 2 cents. Huh, THX Danny for this thread.
and your earning source is amazon, adsense or any other ?

Another person who can't be bothered to take some time to read the thread -- I'll actually answer your question compared to some of the others.

Before I made my first thread (this is 2nd thread) my sites made $600 a month and when I changed them they went to $1700-$1800 a month - now I've pushed up to the $3000-$3250 mark.

There's another thread on BHW - who has a few more sites than me - with many of the same things I do - but perhaps with a couple of bigger sites than I own - and he makes the same as me - if not slightly more..... I'm not interested in Big Sites - because losing 1 would be too costly - with these they are a dime a dozen and you can just can sites that don't perform.

As you can see I have lost patience with some of the questions asked - I don't mind helping people who are trying - but people who don't even bother to read the thread before asking something not really bending over backwards to answer those.

Cheers

People who browse from their tablet or mobile can easily navigate on a non-responsive website, I don't think responsive sites are necessary, or if they are I think you have to make 2 versions based on the user agent detection: one version for computer users, another one for mobile/tablet users, to cover all the possibilities.

I would disagree, i watched someone browse an old site i had that didn't have responsive on their top of the line mobile, and it was terrible, they had to scroll all over the place to see the site, and i noticed they missed some of the important parts of the site, and they lost interest very quickly.

With a responsive it fits everything in no questions ask automatically, and you don't miss a thing. You should stick to non responsive though. :)

I think too that something that is very relevant to the thread.

My sites some are coming up to 2 years old - some are one year old or little more.

One of the posters said his sites that were doing well were 2-3 years old .. I'm pretty sure on the Amazon Thread he says his sites are 1+ years old as well.

So I think you have to move your expectations in order.

1. Reaching $600 a month - with 10-20 Sites -- just about anyone can do this - should be no problem - I've done it with FSB and Wordpress from Scratch when I knew alot less than I know now and back then I didn't have Tools did most stuff by hand.

2. Reaching $1800 a month - your going to need 20-30 Sites - your going to have to really understand the process and be tweaking everything so you know what will Sell and what won't before you start and even then some sites still won't work out.

3. Reaching $3000 a month - your going to need 30+ Sites - that are perfectly optimized / have excellent Seo / have great content -- great user experience and have a Solid Base of Google Rankings across the niches - and you need diversity because Sales rise and Fall for various products through the year.

As you rise across the board - your going to probably need some management software to cut down your time spent hopping from one site to the other and to get everything done fast.

So match what you have against what it can realistically achieve : and don't forget the older your sites get the more valuable they become in terms of the return they bring in .. so please don't over link your sites in the beggining and use as much diversity as possible.

Cheers

I have a site that's in the lawn and garden niche and it doesn't really do too great. I'm thinking it's because it's either too broad of a niche or it could be the content. Visitors might be looking more for real user reviews. Almost all users on my getclicky tracker say 10sec for visiting time and they leave, which is more frusturating, but then again I'm only getting at tops like 15 visitors/ day, which might not be a good indicator yet. This month however I'm at 4 ordered items..

Seems it has alot of small issues stopping it from being as successful as it should be.

My overall indicator is $100 a month average return - if it can't do that then I'm not too interested
in maintaining it after a year.

Could you elaborate more on your content strategy?

I've been building different types of sites.

1) Informative, like your example.

Best wireless router: explain how and why we choose these 3 routers, links to pages specific to reviews of affordable, medium priced, and high priced products. Then attract traffic from long tail search, especially from those who are searching for information, i.e.: how to boost wireless router signal, where to place wireless router, etc.

In the end of each article, link to those review pages and homepage for info about best wireless router so they can read more, click on product links, come to Amazon and shop.

In other words:

- Tier 1: best wireless router (homepage) - monetization
- Tier 2a: reviews of a few wireless router products - monetization
- Tier 2b: informative articles - for traffic

This converts okay, as people who are searching for those keywords may already have routers. They only want to find answers to their questions. If they already have it, I assume they rarely buy just because a product offers stronger signals. Chances are they are looking for other ways to boost the signal strength first before finally replace their router.

2) Category based. I only begin to build such sites, but would like your feedback.

Chicken dog treat: a bit of information about this kind of dog treats, along with links to pages specific to reviews of a few "editor's pick" chicken dog treats. This is much like the best wireless router examples above.

But for traffic, I pick long tail keywords from brand specific chicken dog treat, for example: dogswell chicken dog treat, purebites chicken dog treat, and so on. Each pages is basically sub-category of the main site category.

In other words:

- Tier 1: chicken dog treat - monetization
- Tier 2a: reviews of a few chicken dog treat products - monetization
- Tier 2b: brand based sub-category pages - traffic and monetization

As keywords for tier 2b are usually less competitive as they are more to the right of the long tail, they make a good source for traffic but they are also good commercial keywords.

What do you think of this site structure? Do you always build information based website?

I do it like 1.

HomePage - Reviews Buy Buttons / Text Links / Image Links
HomePage - Articles via Sliders with Image Link / Text Link and Information Button

and then included are accessories for extra Sales and for people who have the main item but need to know what accessories are the best .... even me I own Ipad 2 I always search online for best accessories before I buy these things - because some are really bad and not useful and some are good - so I make Sites to solve these problems.

Then I solve peoples problems like you mention for traffic purposes - and to generate extra clicks so if they buy anything in 24 hours I get commissions -- as you indicated some people need help setting up router/ configuring router/ setting passwords / range extenders there are lots of problem solving things you can add - and still gain some chance of a Sale.

Category Based Product Name I don't like that approach so much because people don't so much always know what brand to select - they may search
healthiest dog treat for 2 year old spaniel -- not Dogswell Dog Treats .. think the first one stands better chance for more searches and sales - because if people like what your saying then they will click something.

Anyway that's the same as I have indicated before how I would do it - but if you think Category Based/Product Type works better then give it a try ... those are my thoughts on it.

Cheers

Please don't PM me with questions like

"how do I make money from Amazon"
"how do I set up a site"

at this point after 2 long threads I'm not going to answer these type of PM's anymore -- if you want me to look at your site really quick - then PM me the URL - otherwise ask your questions here so everyone can see them.

I'm taking your SEO strategy to heart so expect a few months before I report back about how the new site structure will work.

I've been researching a few thousand keywords per day. Found many sub-category based keywords. Because they contain trademarked names, I can't buy their EMD domains so instead of focusing on each sub category as one domain I decided to make a small authority site out of them. It may take even longer to rank but I'm willing to throw in a few authority site models just for diversification.

Just noticed that you never mentioned about specific keyword numbers. How many searches per month do you consider worth the effort, etc. I guess you just focus on a keyword, then build a useful site around the keyword? How do you come up with topics the readers want to know about? Are they based on keywords, or do you use forums, Yahoo Answers or the like to find questions?

No - like I said Keyword Numbers are useful but they are not real world when it comes to Amazon.... I don't rule out Sites based on those numbers - ultimately for me it rests on how competitive it is and how optimized other sites are. Also some words are general words in real life not buying terms -- the more general the word the less Im interested in that.

Because if I'm selling $1000 item and I'm getting $70 + a Sale - that site only has to sell 2 a month to hit my criteria -- so if I'm bringing in "Buyers" that's the most important thing to me.

Sure they often buy accessories but that's just the way it is.

So yeah I'm not narrow minded enough to say it has to be this or that - well I gotta be able to rank - and its got to be something that is going to generate Sales.

As far as selecting things to do and how to target - well that's just a skill you will learn as you target various areas and see the results - I don't care what other people say - all I care about is how much money I get in my pocket - so I stick with what I know works -- not what someone thinks will work or what their "friend" told them works.

Also related to that is there are a few things I don't say it has to be done this way 100%

I've left it so people make it their own - as the last thing anyone needs is people coming into their niche with the exact same sites / keywords and structure.

This way everyone has just as much chance as the next guy.

Guys Danny has given you a BASIC blueprint, he is not interested in doing all of your work. You can do things differently and he is encouraging that in order for you to test for yourself.

I will tell you all what I did, just as a test.

Jan 1st created a site- Category based lets call it turbochargers, now on the site I have a number of general articles about turbochargers-
what they do
How they work
research behind them
etc...

Then I have reviews of specific turbochargers like "Jims turbocharger review" and in them I have links to Jims turbo on Amazon.

The site is about the size Danny uses but I am adding a bit more because I have a large variety of turbochargers I can review.

I do very little SEO to it A- not a lot of comp B- Dont want to spend too much C- I have it ranking for longtails and some "review" keywords already with some high quality PR's D- this was a test

This month about $70 in commissions even with a lower price point than Danny targets, so by using his guide 10 of these puts me about $700 p month range which is exactly his target.

As you can see it does not have to be a carbon copy, he gave you some advice use what you want and discard the rest. The most important thing is just do do something.

thanks so much for chiming in - and you hit the nail on the head -- we are not creating 10,000 sites exactly the same.

everyone can create their own little empire done with their "secret sauce" -- you can make it more successful / less successful .. do it your way
and get some nice monthly income.

Just be patient with it - it does take a few months to really start getting consistent traffic and then Sales start to come regularly .. the more unique you are
and the better targeted you are - the better your conversion rates are going to be.

thanks again getwhatchuwant.

To Getwhatchuwant:

Please understand that I have no intention to be spoon fed. But could you please answer this question?

I am sure I'm not the only one, but if you write "what they do", "how they work", "research behind them" articles and none are searching for those every month, what good are those other than perhaps to decrease bounce rate?

I built a gigantic site before in 2008 based on that model. I read forums every day and gave answers through my blog. Each blog post took me 3-4 hours to finish, but the site never exceeded 400 visits per day in its prime. I was hoping for much more than that after working 1.5 years on it. My PR was 6 and I got links from PR 5, 6 and 7 authority sites so I know it worked. Just that those contents were targeting keywords people rarely search.

But informative? Yes. They enjoyed it? Yes. Were they interested? Yes. I built a few thousands RSS subscribers too.

So how do you explain why it works? Perhaps because you are using LSI keywords so you rank for 50 very very long tail keywords for each article? (I have a site with over 1000 pages and receiving traffic from around 18,000 keywords per month. Very long tail.)

Do you even base the "general information" articles on keywords, or do you grab ideas out of thin air, based on what you think will make a good site (that adds value to the niche)?

So yeah, I know how to find topics people are interested in. I can come up with a dozen general information about wireless router or any other niches, even micro niches.

I'm just trying to figure out how to make this more effective.

Believe me, I'm all for doing something. I'm building my 17th Amazon site this weekend. :)

To Danny: I am not sure I understand you completely so please help me out. I understand the process now. I've built several sites based on your structure. So please understand if I dig into details.

You said, "the more general the word the less Im interested in that."

Do you refer to the main keyword for the site?

Because that was exactly my concern. "how to reset wireless router password", etc. and also "research behind them" type articles are based on general keywords. I bet the OCI is low. There is where I tried to figure out your way of thoughts.

When I look at keyword research tool, I examine search frequency, competitors and OCI. Ranking 1st for a keyword with Local column 500 is better than ranking 10th for Local: 1500. I guess we both agree here, you said this before I think.

So yeah, I never decide upon a keyword only because they have high search volumes. My main question was not that. The reason I said you never mentioned about search volumes because I'm curious if your "general articles" are based on any keyword research at all.

Do you build a site because there is a good commercial keyword, and then come up with supportive content (general articles) regardlress of the keyword volume if the SERP competitors are low?

Good questions, the answer is the topics I write for general information DO have searches. I use google kw tool and semrush to sort out some of the targetted topics I will write about.

So back to my turbocharger example, I assure you that if I wrote about it they have traffic and then I link from that article to a product review which of course has an Amazon link in it.

That said Amazon sites are NOT my main source of income, my main income comes from working for one guy who has a few sites and we have our own products. We also have affiliates that sell for us and they do it the same way.

So they have a multitude of topics that brings in traffic and then of course our links on their site and they make sales, alot of them!

I guess to summarize the topics you should write about should also have traffic yet be relatively easy to rank for and then provide an internal link to a product related to your "how to" or "what is" article.

I would guess KW target and niche selcetion to be the key.

This is simple :

"Wireless Routers" no ... "Best Wireless Routers For Small Business" maybe "Best Wireless Routers For Business Travellers" maybe "Which Wireless Router To Buy For My Kids" - maybe

Just find something smaller ... then choose products / accessories to match

then add complimentary articles - so that you get traffic not just only focussed on that one area - solve problems .. how to reset passwords .. how to configure .. how to install .. how to extend range etc etc

So yes Keyword Volume is a factor and I do look at it - but I've got to 100% be able to rank Top 3 for the main target of the site... or I'm wasting my time - because the complimentary traffic won't bring enough Sales to make it work.

In saying all that - there are thousands of targets for every product - it really is one of the easier things to do - as well as choosing a domain ---> personally having done it for FSB / AutoBlogs / Magento Stores and standard WP sites - I think it sounds alot harder than actually doing it.

Again - this comes up alot =--- > people always like to see ... If I do A then B = $$$$

But this is the internet - there is competition -- so I can't guarantee B .. it's best to try it as I have said - then see what traffic you get compared to KW Tool - and what Sales that leads too.

Figure out for you - how to get it so - 1 Site averages $100 a month... then scale it.

Its like I look at people's sites and one guy picks womens $20 shoes ?? It's a waste of time obviously but its their site and their decision.

There is no way I'm going to write an exact figure on BHW - because if I do that - then the whole idea of how I run my business will be gone - people will scrape / outsource and kill it ---> or it will be sold as a WSO and my whole business will be ruined.

Just As Examples

Arthritis / Knee Pain / Wrist Pain / Neck Pain / Ergonomics

There are thousands of ways to tackle health type things - but I'm not going to sit here all day and work for you guys LOL .. I gotta make some money too !

You don't think that people with these issues are Buyers of Products ? There are so many ways to meet people's real everyday needs.

I'm out for today .. cheers.
