are you sure that it wasn't a google update going on at the same time?

It's still possible for what you said to be the actual reason, of course. But from what I know authority websites (of which many web 2.0s are) can really take a beating from garbage links, that's why we're using the web 2.0s as buffer sites

It's also possible that you've abused the anchors of your web 2.0s and - upon blasting these with the spam - the web 2.0s got crawled and google detected the abuse and penalized you. Abused anchors are one of the easiest triggerable algo penalties that I've seen, so it's possible that this happened too...

I'm not arguing against you (I'm sure you have the full picture of that situation), but I am saying that the reasons for that penalty could have been diverse
