Dear fellow SEO warriors,
I have seen numerous posts on BHW about people wanting to rank #1 for certain keywords. "How to rank higher'', ''how to rank fast'', ''how to earn $5000 a month without investment''. Today was a shitty day for me. So I hope I can help others with some things I have learned from SEO over the last couple of years. To make me feel better I guess.
Lesson #1 Don't trust a SEO guru
People who make the most money with SEO are the persons who do not do a lot of everyday SEO themselves. Lets face it. I used to be a fan of Neil Patel and Brian Dean once. They have some great guides. But in the end its all about making cash. You are being played. Brian Dean charges $ 1200 for a course. That means that he will earn $1,200,000 when only 1000 persons bought the course . Great deal right? That is why they pretend that their solution is the only way to rank higher. But do you really think a news or authority site would link to your money page without getting something in return? Or how is the so called skyscraper technique even possible in a small market? When there is no one to get a link from.
Tip #1 Do not spend money on courses.... If you want to know if something works in your market or country? Always test it yourself. Things that work in other markets might not work in your situation. So you have to find out what works for you. Do what others have not done and make $$$.
Lesson #2 If you want to rank BIG you got to be BIG
I would love to work at Amazon or another big Ecommerce site. Why? Because SEO would be soooo damn easy. Some sites are able to rank #1 within a couple weeks without even trying. No backlinks to that certain page and content that would even scare your grandma off. That is probably one of the most frustrating aspects of SEO. Especially when you thought a 3000 word article with tons of videos and images would take your straight to the top. I had a situation where I spend $ 30,000 on fucking great guest posts in a non competitive market. Nothing changed a dime. It is all about the complete link profile authority
Tip #2 Know your place and budget. A lof of SEO guys want to earn lots of money without spending any cash. Not going to happen. I started making websites and doing SEO 10 years ago. I always thought that I could do it without spending a dollar. It was something I was proud off when I had the chance to tell my friends. I always wanted to write my own content, build my own links etc. Result = no social life and no money because you can not grow fast enough. If you are not willing to invest than you are getting nowhere.
Google seems to favor big sites a lot now compared to a couple of years ago. So... you got to be realistic. Big competition = Big budget. If you want to win in the long run think big. Become a huge fucking site with tons of backlinks. And you will finally be able to rank without any efforts....
Lesson #3 Do not check your rankings every single day
Checking rankings should be described as an addiction. I know so many SEO marketeers (including myself) who Google their desired keywords every single hour. It absolutely makes no sense. But more importantly it makes you do stupid things. It is like going to a casino. A winning streak will cause you to do more risky things. So when you finally ranking higher you could totally blow it by building more links because you thought that was necessary. Keep that in mind. You can only say whether something has worked or not after a longer period...
Tip #3 Just check search console every once and a while. And do more projects so it is impossible to keep track of all your positions
