The great A.I. debate and why you should learn it

A few weeks ago I watched the Isaac Asimov Memorial debate (2018 edition) where the primary topic is A.I. I would encourage everyone to watch it:


It's 1 hour long (and 1 hour of questions) but definitely worth hearing twice.
Here are a few things they discuss:
  1. What can A.I. do right now?
  2. What are the biggest challenges in creating A.I. systems?
  3. What will A.I. be able to do in the next decade?
  4. How will our world look like in the next 35, 50 , 100 years?
  5. Will A.I. kill us or help us evolve?
In my personal opinion is that most of us should learn about A.I. on a deeper level, I mean learn how to program/create such systems. Because at some point A.I. will kill programming as we know it right now. There are already projects/companies that focus on developing AI that creates software code and solves challenges. AI is these days being used to help doctors to look at MRI pictures (detecting cancers/tumors) and it does a better job than the doctors themselves (it's doing a better job than doctors do manually).

AI will not kill jobs, but it will kill specific jobs such as implementing "PSD to HTML" kind of stuff. Not immediately but eventually. More and more IT-people will start becoming consultants that are trained to interpret the output of AI and bring that forth to clients. Companies will spend less time & resources doing basic programming and implementation (such as developing websites). I believe there are many exciting new higher level programming techniques coming soon (that are more UI-based, less code based). I'm also pretty sure there are already folks developing AI for SEO and link building, article writing, social media automation using AI, and more.

This AI thing is huge and is going to have a 1000x bigger impact on our world than what crypto/blockchain will ever do. I am attacking crypto/blockchain because of its hype and growth. People already consider blockchain as a step into a better future -- but it's also true how many people are still fighting "against" crypto/blockchain technologies. The fight against AI will be even fiercer, because anyone going against AI development will be eliminated immediately.

But we should definitely be careful, because terrorists can easily use AI and face recognition to develop autonomous weapons e.g. small drones that fly to you and then explode. Until now we have the cyber security industry that prevents hackers/crackers -- but now we'll also have a new industry that uses AI to fight against AI.

No matter how we look at it, good or bad, AI is here and will never leave us. It's like the invention of a computer, so AI has become a tool/method that will never disappear in human history. But at some point silicone-based AI will be replaced by carbon-based AI, but we (i.e. our generation) may not even live to see that happen.

TL;DR
Encourage your kids/family/friends to learn more about programming, A.I., science and especially data science. It's going to benefit them in the years to come.

100% agree with you.

5-10 years all streets full of auto drive cars, no drivers or less drivers.
15 years mobiles phones gone/replaced by 3D/VRAR devices, blockchain techs bloom everywhere.
20 years diseases gone
25 years society full of robots, 50/50 human/robot
30-40 years human immortal

There is no doubt, AI will change the world, I will learn it.

Here a nice implementation of ML for turning mockup into code, to your point PSD to HTML etc...HERE
It will still take time until we have true AI, all stuff working in production now for the most part is supervised learning so no true AI (microsoft chatbot example anyone lol)

@theRevolt I believe AI will always be supervised. What I mean is that AI will always have to learn from some data, and tuned to a specific/desired output.

I think to achieve a greater AI system is for AI to learn from other AI systems. This is how humans learn. All babies learn from other humans, so shall new AI systems be developed. If this can be achieved, then there could be parties/companies that sell modular AI trained networks, so a new company can buy several of those modules and train a new network for a specific task by only using those modules (without the need of having any data themselves, or maybe just a little). I'm super excited :D

Not familiar with anything related. But lets say I get someone to build a tool for drop shipping and it imports products based of ebay sale history. With AI can I set a system that overtime it imports products with tool that through machine learning will have a better selling rate over time because the system learns the percentages and if set to aim for better sale rate % then tool will tweak search settings over time? Is this what AI is, and how are you guys implementing it with your strategies now?
 
I didn't watch the video yet , but did they mention when they will be able to make real working paypal money generator ?

Ecommerce companies are using AI/ML to optimize "featured products", which products to send you by email, which banners to show , etc...
If your website has a lot of traffic, and you have data that could be used to train an AI system that can predict which products are going to increase your sales by e.g. 5% -- then yes.
But you should ask yourself, is that 5% going to be worth developing such a system?
It's a great exercise if you want to learn AI/ML yourself, but I you're only making a few bucks per day then there are much better ways to improve sales/profit (such as CRO).

Why shameless, I haven't seen their commercials yet though :p.
I encourage everyone to get into AI right now, it's still very early stage, and a ton is yet to be invented which will give rise to many successful entrepreneurs.
Since most of us are not scientists, we shouldn't try to be, but we should use whatever exists and apply it in commercial settings.

A quick glance at the empirical data shows that terrorist don't need any kind of fancy technology to be extremely effective. Low tech is perfectly capable for huge damage.
 
AI will definitely shape the future, but the question is whether this future will be better or worse than what we have now. AI that runs the government, AI distributes universal income, AI that cleans your house, AI that gathers your food, etc.
 
Hopefully AI can do it without having the neighbor spying on you though haha.

That is very true indeed, for now at least, fortunately. But I'm trying to say that we should always be cautious :)

You don't need to become an AI expert to get an advantage in SEO, just learn regression analysis.

Oh those brands/products have nothing to do with true AI. It's just a ploy to get more investors and/or sell more units.

yea but someone will have to code and update that AI right until it becomes self-updating and ITs, at least these responsible for AI, become obsolete, but that will never happen, because these AI will be expensive as yuck
