The Google Psych-Out!

Another great post, ipopbb

You've set my brain whirring with ideas to use this strategy.

Quick suggestion for you - why not scrape some related text from Wikipedia (or similar) and put it at the top of the page (with appropriate link of course) for some extra kudos?

More Empirical Data From MY SEO Lab

Google has a sweet spot for document size... I just wanted to come in on the low end of that. Also wanted to try and keep the content from get flagged as dupes.

Lol, I use the same method almost one year to make adsense profit.
Just I made WP plugin that do all this....
I'm not getting 100 listings, but 20, the rest is the same like in your example.

Correct. (I am going to share this reply in the forum, a lot of people are asking this question. I hope you don't mind)

I didn't have to do anything for the backlinks... I had so much content for shopping related keywords people just found it in google and linked to it...

Things like forum and blog posts.

"I just found a link for Keyword over here... "

"And here's what google had for KEYWORD..."

When you have that much content in the right keyword space it can go global and people's normal everyday activity turns into 100% organic backlinks.

I had no idea I was gaining backlinks so fast. I thought I was pretty safe by giving the site 1 killer PR8 backlink. I guess that plus the newness bonus made the pages very findable very fast.

The site made $700 in ad sales and $500 in product sales in its final week. I was telling the people I work with "This is happening too fast, I don't know what's going on." I know now... it went global... because of serp scrapers and keyword researchers I got 300K backlinks in just a few weeks without doing any linkbuilding. To reduce it to a formula:

300K backlinks in under 5 weeks = Niche + Unique Content Newness + Very keyword relevant and keyword targeted content and links + Volume of content & keywords + 1 Killer PR8 backlink to get the ball rolling + all launched at the exact same time

Hi,
I just read your article about The Google Psych-Out. I have a few confusions about it. I hope you won't mind to help me out.
As a summary:
You got a site with arnd 300k pages which are actually results from google. e.g. If we search SEO in google it returns following results:
Search engine optimization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And these contained links to the relevant sites. The above text would be content of one of ur page with added spans for uniqueness.
This way you created content for your site containing links to other sites which were top for google.
So Now how you got Backlinks to your site?

Thanks.

Can someone please explain what this means?

""no footprint in the logs" timelines"

This is absolutely freakin' insane, man you are at the cutting edge! Seriously!

This is pretty cool. I think what made this so key to your success was the fact that you were going after the top search terms. Your odds of natural linking go up significantly that way since it's what more people will likely be searching for and posting links on.

This is a neat little experiment and has me almost tempted to setup a few pods like this of my own on some top level keyword data.

Good job on the share... another quality contribution.. rep + thanks

Great post!

SO how many sites did you use to serve the 300k pages.

How did you get them indexed?

Thats a lot of pages!

I need to ask.. you made this plugin? Or you used one? If so.. can you PM me the details or share it here? I looked and I couldn't find anything that does anything like this. Plenty of ways to integrate gsearch, but not gresults with a clean rewrite of the code.

@ OP: Interesting project.

@ deki33: I'm also interested to know if you developed the WP plugin you used or if it is one that exists for sale. Can you share via PM or in the forum? Thank you in advance for your time.

Great post!

How did you get them indexed?

Thats a lot of pages!

1 site. Every page indexed in a few weeks. Simple directory tree structure.

The key to getting lots of pages indexed is fast page load times and no dupes...

I made every page a static html file... those load very fast even under load so googlebot could go as fast as it wants too. If your page load time goes up under load googlebot slows down to not be a denial of service attack. If it gets too slow googlebot just quits after a time limit... If googlebot finds dupes to frequently it thinks its in an infinite loop of your site where the URLs keep changing. When the ratio of dupes to nondupes favors dupes then googlebot thinks it has most of your website and quits. Use canonical tags on every page always.

300K pages takes about 4 weeks for googlebot to get them all.

@ OP If you had to do it all over again...what would you do differently and why? (BTW love the idea and since I've never done this b4 its a bit tough to wrap my mind around. But I am looking to tear this apart and try it on a smaller scale....tnx!)

If I did it again I would deploy the content slower. I could have deploy 10K pages per week and probably would have been just fine. 300K all at once is what revved the backlink engine way too high too fast.

I would generate my content just as slowly if not slower.

I would continue to use proxies anytime I crawl the SERPs for any reason. Its never beneficial to be on Google's radar. I already know Google is associating website authority with email accounts and IP addresses. Throwing in excessive SERP crawling is just going to beg for extra scrutiny from Google's army of mechanical turks.

I would add a bogus "Add URL" form to the footer... Got a lot of inquiries asking how to add a site! :) Should have been my first clue. Might look a smidge more legit if someone over at G takes a look too. I'd craft it with images only... I don't think terms like add URL and submit site are what you want to target... probably want to stay out of the directory keyword space 100%.

I'd add About, Privacy Policy, Contact Us, and other "legitimacy" pages... knowing it's an 11 month investment warrants the extra safety. Perhaps even some Press Releases for the press page...its just a few extra links.

Focusing on a single sector was a good idea too. There are a lot of keywords out there. I chose 300,000 of them that targeted searches "looking to buy" and "goods I had to offer" ... I deleted about 100K pages just for being mildly off target. It sounds silly but when you get into its just as easy to make 32,000,000 pages as it is to make 300,000... The very first time I ran this experiment I collected the internets most popular keywords...all 32 million of them. :) Google did ask me to stop on that one. :) Instead of static html it was a meta search engine with a keyword directory structure... I was sending too many requests to google if you can image that! They were actually polite about. They didn't complain about anything except the volume of requests... Thats why in this latest version I went with pre-fabricated static HTML files... no dynamic requests. Of course... I had to be more selective with my keywords... so delete the cruft.

Take your time... this is an 11 month project... if you do it right and don't quit and just hang in there you can end up with a site that generates a ton of traffic.... just dont forget to have all you static files reference 1 javascript and 1 css. That's how I updated ads...and look & feel. I swap 1 ad in 1 file and all 300,000 pages reflect the change. Would suck to forget that part. ;)

ipopbb, have you used Adsense in monetizing these type of sites?

BTW, thanks for sharing this strategy. Thanks + Rep given.

Yeah... my first attempt at this was adsense only... made $700 the week traffic started. Peeked at about 70,000 visitors per day. Then I had to take it offline because I was sending too many requests to google. This time around I sold product instead and made the same amount of money with a much smaller amount of traffic... mostly sold jewelry I sourced for $0.25 a unit and marked up to $15 with free shipping in the US.

If you haven't seen pandahall.com you should check them out... a some of their stuff is junk but a lot is really nice. Don't by variety packs from them though... you'll get 2 units of popular colors and the rest will be poor selling colors... so only source colors you want... $500 can stock an online jewelry store with 30 skus. Takes a number of weeks to get goods though. Some of the stuff they make when you order and it ships from China. Good wholesale resource for beginners who don't want to invest their life savings to find out if online retail is right for them... They are good about giving you credit for broken in shipping... they request a emailed photo if the damages are extensive, but for most things they just give you a credit no questions asked.

I keep 60 of their SKUs that are only sold in my SEO Lab experiments that involve retail sales conversion and marketing tactics... my production stores have over 14,000 SKUs, but some experiments require something to sell.

Just another hint about the *Lab* ;)

Dude.. you are genius. It's very cool to see people at the stage you are at sharing some knowledge at BHW.

Cool man
