The Complete Guide to Starting a Website [2016 updated]

This is an old thread, a lot has changed since it was posted. Nowadays you don't want to use your main keywords on anchors as suggested in the article. Keywords in domain names play less role than they used to, etc.
you can say that again, digital world is changing so fast

Hi Luka, this post is awesome! Thank you for this complete guide to building a website. The instructions you made are pretty clear and the links are great. I?m sure that many people will benefit from this great post of yours.

Thanks for all the comments guys!
Concerning SEO... This post is a bit out-dated, make sure you read the latest about SEO, ALWAYS. Things change fast. Not saying that the old way doesn't work, but always keep yourself updated.

I'll probably be updating this post with a better guide/updated version soon!

Glad it's helping a lot of people!

Woah, this is so well explained! Thanks a lot, I might start my website sooner than I expected, great guide!

Thanks for this useful thread!

I have some questions:
1) For newly created blog, how long does it take to promote keywords with low-competition into TOP-10?
2) What are the most effective methods to do it?
3) I have already posted about 50 comments, today checked my blog for backlinks at ahrefs and it shows 0 links. Does it take some to see them?

Fatcow hosting is complete crap. I bought it for advertising coupons and I tested it at the same time. Slowest website speed ever.

Well, I would like to know if there's a maximum number of links pointing to my client's site on a 300-500 words article? 1? 3? 5? 10? Thanks pal, I really really like it and appreciate your dedication writing this!

This is priceless information. This post will help lots of people who have just started a new journey in this world.

This is a pretty old thread, but still mostly valid. I would change three things here.

1. Don't get a keyword for a domain. Google despises them. Try to come up with a brand name and promote that. Google loves brands.
2. If you're going local, make sure you purchase the domain locally and also the hosting. For example, if you're trying to rank for UK only, grab a .co.uk domain from a UK based seller and also buy your hosting from a UK based company.
3. Making only a blog isn't a good idea now. Go for a normal website with a home page, several other pages with pages under them and a blog. I would like to suggest you put a lot of thought into the actual architecture of your website. Keep it tidy and Google will love it.

Backlink wise, don't get any in the first month, just share your site and posts on social media. After that try and not spam. Moderation is king!

Does including keywords in your domain still stand important today?
