It's basically Reddit but with a more privacy focus audience and less moderation.
With privacy comes sketchy channels.
Also sketchy scammers selling weed. Smh.

It's wild how everything that protects users privacy (Telegram, Monero, etc.) is under attack by governments because 1% of people use it for illegal activities. That will be their justification for banning/restricting cash as well.
I'm curious if Telegrams encryption feature will continue to work as normal even with Pavel's arrest or if this will change anything with the app. I imagine he already planned for this scenario.

For the record, Telegram is barely private (E2EE possible only on secret chats on mobile phone) and entirely un-encrypted for public channels/groups and regular chats.
Telegram as a company has access to all messages and other data that is not in secret chats. They don't cooperate with authorities (at least publicly, but there are allegations about them and Russia). That's one of the reasons why the CEO is in prison.
Signal, on the other hand, cooperates with the government, but since they offer E2EE by default, the information they provide to the government is useless (registration date and/or phone number), because they just don't have any data to provide to begin with.
Correct me if I'm wrong anyone, but I read out the above information doing research these past few days since Durov's arrest.

This is what I've gathered as well.
Honestly, Telegram not being fully private gives him a lot of leverage legally.
He can now easily cooperate with governments.

That is interesting, but it seems like criminals still prefer telegram over signal despite the fact that signal offers privacy by default. Feels like there's something else at play here

Fb , insta , reddit are western that doesn't mean they are totally safe and abide all laws.
The reason is simple: Telegram is a great competitor to these big social media platforms and also telegram is not western .

No the reason is Meta and Reddit hand over user data.
Telegram doesn't.
That's why there was such a massive media uproar when Elon acquired Twitter.
They knew he would no longer hand over user data and supress media.

Musk is a different thing.
He has a lot of benefit for USA government - producing cars (Tesla), rockets (SpaceX) creates a lot of jobs.
I've read that Boeing spaceship can't bring back a few astronauts from space so SpaceX will do that instead....that's huge.
Whereas Telegram is based in UAE, pays little to no tax only UAE itself and in the eyes of the governments worldwide causes a lot of damage with their refusal to cooperate with governments or moderate their content.

You're right.
This is a guy they can arrest and shove around to make an example of him. They want to put pressure on him (and all of big tech by proxy) to force him to cooperate with their law enforcement. France is aggressive at petitioning tech companies providing encrypted comms for user data. Protonmail had 5,971 government requests that it complied with last year (that means the Swiss government approved them). You can bet most of those came from its European neighbors, France and Spain in particular. Arresting him for what people do on his network is like arresting a knife manufacturer for murder if his knife gets used in the killing.

In the tech startup circles I follow, the general consensus is that not only is France too risky to start at tech company in but the entirety of the European Union.
