Let say you have a few partners (small team) working on SEO projects for 2 years now. Everything going great. Nice people, trusted and cool individuals etc.

Now, you want to expand your business further and going into 'online reputation management'. Would you look for other partners for this or would you consider the 'SEO team' for this as well?

My only concern about the existing seo team is that they know nothing about online reputation management and if they do get their hands onto it, then they might lose focus causing 50% to SEO / 50% to online reputation, you know..

However, on the other hand, since these guys are very well reliable and trusted, things will go even better if things workout.

Share your experience and opinion on this. Appreciated.

If the seo work leaves them with no free time then you have no option but hiring new people. I would teach both teams the 2 jobs and mix everything between them to be able to handle both the jobs when members of the team are not present (vacation/quit work).

Finding nice people you can trust is the hard thing.... everything else is easy.


open a separate division.... and if it does not work out.... then shut the division down, without alienating what you have working now.

and of course if you are worried about them being spread too thin, then by all means get ready to hire if you are making money from the new stream of work.

I see both of your concepts make sense, but from another point of view..
its like getting my 'basketball' team to play 'soccer'?

recently i realized that what i actually need was not other partners. these can be pretty tough to find. possibly the hardest thing in the world to find decent and reliable partners.

the division idea with employees rather than partners would be my pick from the options.

When you guys mention 'division', i believe thats pretty much the concept of 'splitting the existing team into 2', am i right?

I was having a similar problem. I had a team, but I didn't want to burden it with many seo projects, so I got another one. Now, all my seo projects, are divided 50-50 between both the teams. So the productivity doesn't fall and I'm not relying entirely on just one team.

But i guess in your scenario, both teams have knowledge in SEO and know what they are doing.

For me, I m still kindda confused; moving SEO people to online reputation management seems like moving basketball players to soccer to me.

Be careful messing up your existing SEO business. You easily end up with less than you have now.

I'm a little bit in the same case than you, I have a team working on SEO and I wanna add reputation management, I'll do a test first to see how thing will work if I learn them this new product (Sales people/Webdev) it's like updrading their knowledge. If everything goes fine during a month and the work is done in a good way i'll keep my team working on both seo/rep management, until rep management will make me some money i'll hire a new people for this too to expand a little bit.
Don't forget that it's not that easy finding stars and it takrs a long time to test lot of people time waste=money waste so start with what u have till finding good persons
and the best thing is having a team that can work on many different stuff at a time, so if ever one peson leave another can do it's job till u find new people.

When you guys mention 'team', are they mostly local (as in real life), or 'virtual' (as in oDesk, freelancer etc.)
