I just read a blog post on QuickSprout. Neil says that if you syndicate your article from your own site or post snippets to other sites, your site will be hit by duplicate content penalty. His observation is based on his own site - QuickSprout. Though his data supports his claim, yet I'm not convinced that it is 100% valid based on a single isolated observation.

His article was syndicated to high authority sites eg. Entrepreneur.com. I thought that is great as Entrepreneur.com has high traffic, funneling traffic to his site. But he only showed decline in traffic from Google. He didn't mention referral traffic from Entrepreneur.com.

If I remember correctly, duplicate content penalty only happens on your own site. Adam, a member of this forum conducted a test on a single syndication using Web 2.0 and his client's site was not penalized. In fact, the result was impressive even after Penguin 3.0. Again, it is only one site tested.

What do you guys think about it?

IMO it seems counter intuitive that original article gets penalized because someone else duplicated it (and is giving credit). Imagine negative seo possibilities if this would be true. I think the reason for his loss of traffic was something else.
 
What a load of crap. He really don;t have any new topics so he is pulling some random 2006 shit out of his ass. Just take a look at his http://www.searchenginejournal.com/get-blog-posts-read/110919/ at SEj where he is talking about bullet points, headings and conclusion (things that make a good blog post).
Now ask yourself- How many times have you already saw this type of article before? Me? 100s of times...
 
For what it's worth, a while back ago I was competing for this keyword on Google with a web 2.0, was ranking high, seen a competitor creeping in. He had some nice presale so I ripped the article and replaced it on my web 2.0, I don't know how or why it happen but it seem to kick him out the rankings when Google recrawled. I maintained position, his site got blasted. I believe this various on case by case bases.
 
Ok. So Lifehacker very often posts snippets from other people's blog. Does this mean all those people take a hit coz of this? I doubt so. If anything else they gain from it.
 
I dont think dup content is a problem wrt penalties... Try searching on snippets of ezine articles and you'll see tons of sites listed... Most likely G just ignores it and lists the site which is credited for being the original which in most cases is the one which got indexed first (which has caused problems with stolen content from large authority sites against the little guy due to G's frequency of crawling on large sites vs. smaller ones)... From an academic point of view - its essential to make citations/references of other work - so it would be crazy to penalize that... So I'm still sitting on the fence regarding that... but interested to hear what others have to say... I think its crazy that people can steal your content and then your website gets penalized... Surely that is not the case!!!

Majority of authority sites are curated with duplicates all the time, this can never be true on only that single website you need more data, this kind of shitty claim is not good for credibility no sir'e

think about the possibilities of being equipped with a new arsenal for the growing Negwars...

I use to really follow his blog, but over the last year or so it's really getting shitty.
I'm fairly certain he doesn't even write his own blog posts anymore
 
I guess he forgets to vet through this post if someone writes it. Too many flaws and questions about his so called "duplicate content penalty". It just doesn't make sense. I could still find blocks of same words indexed in Google. There will always be a certain level of duplicate content over time. You can't control what other sites publish. And your site is going to be penalized because other sites publish part of your content or full content. That's outrageous if you ask me.

I agree with Jon that his posts are getting nowhere. Yet he still has many fans who follow his advice blindly.Just look the comments on his posts.

Maybe we can learn one or more things about the way he markets himself or his SEO service.

Let's see him repeat the same strategy 10 -100 more times, and I'd venture to bet his conclusion is total BS.

Doesn't sound right to me, this would take Neg SEO to a whole new level. Honestly, I don't belive it, it wouldn't make any sense at all.
 
LOL. That's pretty funny. If that were the case, half the internet would be penalized. Duplicate content NEVER effects the original source, and never will. That would be 10x worse than negative SEO. Someone can just scrape entire websites and duplicate them on 1,000,000 web 2.0's and penalize websites on command.

Sounds like some wannabe SEO Guru Blogger bullshit to me.
 
Somehow I don't think that is true.
Unless it was flagged up for another reason - like every single article was syndicated elsewhere and there was a bad footprint that arose from that?

Their policy is actually that you shouldn't copy articles from external sources or snippets of articles from external places without providing considerable value of your own. Same goes for YT videos which kinda sucks as I like writing short intros when sharing a video I found online.
