Exactly so, I also have observations that Google has cut out the health and beauty, erotic, adult and gambling.
- I have cut out on pages on a cloack with generated content, pages with written content, etc. So, it's not about content.
- I have cut out on pages, small pages with several subpages, websites with lots of subpages. Both with written and generated content.
It's not about page type or content.
For me, as long as the only determinant is that they cut out domains in sensible visibility.

My site got hit hard. I lost about 90% of my traffic. Built on an expired domain. A couple of my competitors built on expired domains as well and didn't seem to get hit.

They cut out expired domains, as well as completely new domains.

Yeah, looking at the 4-5 sites that I considered competitors, they all have done the blackhat tactics. Either pbns, expired domains, link buying. The only difference between their sites and mine is I had a few domains 301d to me.

I think it was cleaning the tops.
Rather patches will not be. In my opinion, now put new pages and that's it.

My 1st position keyword change ranking every 2 hours (from 1st to 4th) since yesterday.. so nothing is sure for now!

Its most likely some sort of google analytics bug going on for the past few days due to a possible algorithm update.

Having read through the 7 pages to date, it seems there is no discernible pattern. Expired and non expired domains hit, all niches, WP and non WP sites, 301 and not 301 boosted sites, blackhat and whitehat.
My own experience is exactly the above, I can find no reason why a bunch of my sites have been hit. Particularly annoying for quality whitehat sites. 1 site was 4 years old, with quality links and content, sitting in top spot for multiple KW's for numerous years, now 90% gone!!!
The only thing I am wondering about is 301 redirects. I would point to this, but I have sites with 301's doing just fine, so no proof to point to.
If anyone has or finds better information, please share.

Spanish travel website, all original content wrote by me, updated, my pictures, interviews in famous newspapers and podcasts and i lost 90% of traffic. horrible, from 800-1000€ to few euros monthly. I started to use duckduckgo.com search engine, firefox and I'am gonna use Yandex metrix, hating Google.

This update once again shows the importance of making sure your website is ranking in Bing.
Get your site Bing verified and submit your sitemap in Bing webmaster tools.
Had a closer look at my stats and found that 20% of my traffic comes from Bing.
I guess it is better to bet on two horses (In the case of Google and Bing on a Horse and a Shetland pony)
