I've noticed over the last few years of success that as I gain more and more free time, the more prone I am to depression. I have a big social circle and a rather good social life, but if i don't put constant effort into social I lapse into bad habits.

The correlation between more financial independence and depression has always struck me as odd. What do you guys think?

I feel like I'm the complete opposite, the more financial freedom I have the less depressed I am. Having the ability to spend money allows me to have more of a social life, it allows me to stay occupied.

Do something excited, if you have money spend it. Even alone you can have fun, I'm buying a big burger and a video game, just cuz I'm doing good at work.

the more free time I have, the less depress I am.

When I feel like I overwork myself, I always make it a point to reward myself. I go party with friends, watch movies or shop.

Depression is not a sign of weakness. It's a sign that you have been strong for too long.

Summer is just around the corner. Find something fun and exciting to do outside. Hiking, sun bathing, bike, whatever. Just getting out of the house cured my depression every time.

    1) The more you have, the more you want.

    2) Look at the personalities of the five people you hang out with the most. Are they depressed and negative? Get the fuck away.

Maybe you've got to spend more time to people you love like family.

No way, more financial freedom is good for me.
Maybe there is something else in your life that you either need, or need to get away from? I think the depression is your mind trying to communicate that to you.

I agree....I don't think its gaining additional free time which is the cause, but rather additional free time which is not being filled with some sort of activity. As long as I'm doing something, I'm fine, but if I'm just sitting around, doing 'noting' for days on end, thats when it kicks in.

I've also find that if you go from doing a lot, to suddenly doing nothing - that also triggers it too.

TBH OP I found the same.

I just worked out that I actually like to work. Having 8 hours of free time a day is great and everything, but you don't feel like you have done anything of great value and you can't look back proud at what you did that day when you sat around watching netflix and scratching your bollocks.

I like to keep busy, do things, see results or totally fucking fail and learn something from it. Sitting around watching 15 episodes of breaking bad is a waste.

Just like Dying isn't a sign of absolute nothingness. It's just a sign that you have been alive for too long.

    How dare you

I totally feel you. The problem is having too much free time. Just find a way to fill up that free time and you will no longer be depressed.

I'd agree with both, personally I'm pretty fulfilled in my life and have quite a lot of hobbies however I also have a lot more freetime than most people. I find that as someone who has a family history of depression it's important to be very self aware and I notice the lack of structure is something that encourages it.

The reason I make this post is that I've seen it as a recurring theme with many very successful entrepreneurs being unhappy or developing depressive habits. I'm working on a comprehensive blog post about it, and it's interesting to see others experiences.

Find new exciting projects, being in your comfort zone leads to depression.
