SubDomains and SEO

I was planning on creating practically hundreds of website all of them totaly independent from the others but on a single domain name.

I was planning on using a general domain name, giving each and every one of the site a relevant subdmain for e.g..

health.stuff.com
money.stuff.com

etc...

I will be seo each and every one of the sites on their own particular keywords etc..

Now the question is.

Do search engines penalize websites on subdmains?
Will I suffer page rank rankings because they're all on one domain?
Will directories deny my submitions just because they're all on one domain name?

search engines treat subdomains as different domains.
Its good to have 1 domain, for example:
allaboutthis.com
and then you could make subdomains
money.allaboutthis.com
healthallaboutthis.com
etc.

However, I heard its good to don't make more then 5-6 subdomains on each domain

And directories will or wont accept your subdomain..it depends from directory rules :>

1 - no, search engine do not penalize subdomains, they are treated as different domains
2- i did not get that suffer page rank rankings? Each subdomain will have his own page rank
3-some of them yes, do not accept subdomains, but some of them do. Being that there are a lot of directories, this should not be a problem.

Think about about.com and blogspot.com, this is exactly what they are doing and they are not penalized.
 
Pick a niche (say, dogs)
Put a wordpress blog on the main domain and link to all your dog related subdomains on the blogroll

Make subdomains fast with a free tool called SubExpress

Put a link on your first subdomain pointing to the second and a link on the second pointing to the third etc. Don't close the loop.

Set your wordpress blog to update and ping daily with dog related news stories.

I have a subdomain,on it I am promoting a affiliate program (adult ,no porn)since a month ago,The main page is empty,no blog or something like that.

I tried many ways to get it indexed with no avail, black,blue,and white hat.
(Backlinks,directories,trackbacks,bookmarking,google sitemaps,etc)

I was reluctant to put a blog on it, but i'm going to try it,maybe that is the MISSING link?.

Note. The site has more than 100 pages.

subdomain is one great strategies of SEO. imagine blogger.com, they have millions of subdomain. SE could blacklist any of the subdomain (but rarely) not the main domain.

the only cons of the subdomain, once the spam filter flag any of the subdomain, the entire of the domain and sub will be blacklisted too. It may hard for you to do spamming, blog's trackback submission etc related to blackhat strategies.

I would recommand you to use a sitemap and submit it to Google and Yahoo. This speeds up the process of indexation.

But, i learned from other forums that Google has changed its "attitude" towards sub-domains. In fact, i even saw the video interview of the engineer in-charge at Google. So, the news is true, i.e. Google will limit indexing on sub-domain. The most it'll index 203 pages from a subdomain, unless the subdomain is really legitimate and has good values, e.g. us.bank.com, uk.bank.com, etc
 
was that the interview with matt? did he really say exactly 203 pages?

if so, i guess we have to build 10k subdomains insted of just 1k per domain in the future ;-)

What do you guys use to configure 100+ domains on your server? Is there something like SubExpress but for domain names, ie:fre3? Surely you don't configure that many in one sitting manually. I found doma!ndashb0ard, but I wouldn't call that fre3.

I using WPMU to build my blogs. Each WPMU installation has 20~50+ sub-domains. I receive organic search traffic from Yahoo, MSN, bloglines, Ask, Alltheweb...etc. Just little traffic from the G tot, maybe my blogs aren't high in ranking yet.

So, I dont see SE penalize on this area.

Some root domain that I use WPMU has also increase in PR value ( >6months old domain). For domains that has 3~6months in age, they've started to gain PR value too.

So...no worry about this. Just build and build more. Pump them all out :D

Well from my experience I do not recommend that... I created tool a while ago used to create 50-100k subdomain on choosen domain on my server... Well no luck with those... Maybe because I ddint promote them well... Don't know why, but I tried and that didn't worked out...

Sorry, my big typo mistake. I meant indexing only 2 - 3 pages from the subdomain.
