SubDomains and SEO

Do search engines penalize websites on subdmains?

I counted 38 sub domains just off of google's home page. Hard telling how many msn and yahoo are using, other than saying a bunch. That should give you an idea what they think about subdomains.

the only cons of the subdomain, once the spam filter flag any of the subdomain, the entire of the domain and sub will be blacklisted too. It may hard for you to do spamming, blog's trackback submission etc related to blackhat strategies.

I had heard that this isnt true and they do not penalize the domain for the actions of the subdomain, hence the effectiveness of the blog hosts etc.

Well, if google blacklist your domain, all your subdomains are automatically blacklisted, but you can also use that as advantage, bicause if google blacklist one subdomain or maybee more, there is possibility that domain won't get blacklisted.

There is a slightly difference in ranking, as I see it: Blog-sites are a little bit faster to get to higher PR, but also faster in loosing it over time. In the long run you can compensate this by getting better (more unique) content to the site. You also can feed a blog-site and when it gets a reasonable ranking (and just then) start linking from the blog site to your normal site. Did anyone experience the same?

I read through this thread and I gather that I can use subexpress (or something similar) to create multiple subdomains and then I can use wordpress mu to create multiple wordress blogs.

My question is that can you configure the wordpress mu to automically install the wordpress blogs in the subdomain folders created on my host or do I have to do a lot of that manually. I'm a newbie, but I realize the advantage of having a central admin interface for multiple blogs, I'm just curious about the whole process and how easy (or not) it would be for a newbie

I realize that I could probably get this information by googling it, but I would appreciate actual responses from people with past experience on this and maybe tips to avoid wasting time.
