Sub Domain and Domain Name Targeting Similar Keywords?

Hello all

There is this company that has a very large websites with several services, the pages targeting most of these services are on page one of Google already for several keywords.

Do you think it will be harmful if a sub domain name is created targeting similar kywords with that of some of the service pages? The content will be different but it will be targeting similar keywords some of the pages of the main domain are ranking for already!

Subdomains are treated as a separate domains by Google, or at least that's what they say, so in this case, the content cannibalisation should not happen and you should be able to rank both for the same keywords. However, unless someone has actually tried this, it's just a hypothesis.
