stupid SEO clients (part 2)

you know what, you are right. now that i think about it, people either ask their friends/family members for references or go to the nearest hospital. nobody is going to search online. I feel like a fool now. dammit, I am so embarrassed, now he is going to think I am an idiot.
what should my next move be? tell him I made a mistake? or forget about him and go to someone else? or pretend i am not an idiot and just continue with him?
Now that I think about it more, why the hell would a doctor need a website? again, people go to the nearest hospital when they are sick, or ask relatives/neighbors, etc. why would a doctor need a site?

If they want to provide an appointment scheduling service, maybe test results lookup and other options like it. However, this would require a more complicated website tied to a database, I think.

Occasionally these tards just need someone to listen to their ego. I tend to hear them out once in a while, afterwards what seem to be eternity of them talking, it's time to weave your magic and subtly step on their now inflated ego.

Works all the time

The first time is subjectively always the hardest and you are destined to make some mistakes. But that is great actually as it will give you experience and experience is what makes you successful. Just don't make the mistake to get disheartened. See it as any other internship, you are the monkey and don't make much but you learn valuable lessons. Only in this case you may actually make good money. Also don't give up on him until all has failed or you'll gonna need another doctor for the next type of mistake you might make. You'd run out of guinea-pigs eventually :D

Don't tell him you've made a mistake, just move on with what I suggest below or think of something yourself that suits his conception. Tell him his idea is EVEN better because when people are talking about him they can say go to his website, he's that good. Be slimy.

So you call him up and say I have analyzed the possibility to make your name come first when people are searching for you. Now all we need to do before we make it happen is to figure out what to put on your site (this will make him work for you in providing the content). Snatch some great looking paid templates and show them to him. Make him buy whatever he likes. Throw in some 'well thought' considerations like for example big fonts will help because of all the older folks, scanned leaflets from his waiting room table, what magazines his patients can read while waiting. Don't force anything down his throat, just give him the push. He'll think of something I'm sure.

Oh and don't buy the template just yet. Use a nulled version for the development. Only spend money when you see money.

In anything I do, I like to be underestimated. This lets me use other people's perceived superiority because it makes them lightheaded. Like the restaurants, the more expensive they get, the more submissive the maitre d?hotel. But who's the fool in the end? I see many college buddies of mine trying to prove a point to their customers. You only ever have to prove a point in court when taking care of some fool that stole from you.

Now if that doctor was smart he would have already taken advantage of you. I would've played stubborn and let you prove your point and make me a website for peanuts. Time to reverse the roles hehe.

People don't look for doctors online, they have the yellow pages for that.
Horseshit. Yellow pages are a dying resource. If, you're like most people, they haven't touched a YP book in years. Why would use something as dated as YP? If they search in YP for a Dr., you can bet they are searching the internet for a MD.

Just ask the Dr./client, "If you needed an electrician, plumber, painter, etc. what would you input into Google?" The correct answer is "plumber Sacramento", or "Sacramento plumber". If he can't see this basic answer, then he's beyond helping. Just get him ranked for his name and drop the suggestion periodically to expand on it.

What people do is searching for opinions about a doctor or the services he is providing. It is understandable for him to want to rank for his name.
Sure, and there are sites that specialize in recommendations - Angies List for one. Ranking him for his name should be easy enough, but you need to get him to realize if he wants to attract new clients, he needs to rank more than just his name.

How are YP outdated? They are online and you can get listed in less than a day:)
But it's a smart discussion anyway. The only time I go online to find a doctor of some kind is when I need to fake something and make sure it's a new guy. I sure as heck won't go to google to find a pediatrician. But I will do that to check the name of this new doctor a buddy of mine told me about.

Ask your mom where she got wind of her OB/GYN.

I had the same issue with this older lady who runs a dating site...she wouldnt stop bugging with silly questions and did understand seo, google maps and facebook!!. After 2 wks i dropped her as a client.

The doctor can always use affiliate and CPA networks and do special campaigns because he has focused & advanced training in the medical field, and those "humanitarian" campaigns could "help" people suffering from various ailments. Campaigns can be about the medical and psychological products (anxiety, pregnancy, mind control, healthy eating, diets, weight loss, etc., etc., etc.).

Why! He can even come up with a great e-book and be extra useful to the patients all over the world by having a website and selling it (apart from making more money for his family)! He can always write more ebooks on his favorite medical topics and be much more useful to the patients all over the world!

Convince him about how he can be online and serve mankind more efficiently by having niche website/s. Also tell him that there is stiff competition in these fields, but he can still try and be on the first page of Google which, of course, you can help him achieve.

Give him such great ideas, and he can be your best friend throughout his life!

There are so many "ethical" things a doctor can still do by using his medical knowledge!

My 0.02 to help you both make those latent millions... together! :)

So don't sell yourself short in the market!

HTH :)

I explained how. They are outdated the day they are published. The same as any other reference book.

They are online and you can get listed in less than a day:)
That's not a book is it?
I sure as heck won't go to google to find a pediatrician.
But people would check the online YP listing to find one? You're contradicting yourself. The point is that, sure, people ask people for recommendations. That is irrelevant to SEO for professions. SEO for them is about getting the traffic for those people that don't have personal recommendations, who are new to town, whatever.

Want to build me a site to prove your point? (j/k :D )

Ok, any time I use the term "YP" please regard it as both the offline as also the online version. Checking online YP listings is not the same as using Google so I don't see how I can contradict myself when I say people prefer the YP over an actual search engine. Granted I may be wrong but it is not a contradiction.

Now if you want to reach those that can't get a recommendation you can of course go for it. But the remaining users are by no means irrelevant. That's how I see things when aiming for actual professionals. But who knows, maybe you're making more than me so it's the OPs job to choose a strategy. Or try both I guess.

I Just flicked though this thread and from what I scanned most of you are missing the point.
The Dr is not the slightest bit interested in SEO, Google places, Social media, Email,
Youtube, Linkdin, Twitter or Digg.
He's interested in clients.
You're approaching him as a vendor.
You're trying to sell him a solution and you haven't even convinced him he has a problem.

If you're going to approach them as a vendor, Sell a product not a service.
Sell a Mobile optimized site or a facebook fanpage or a blog.

You can't sell SEO on the first meeting unless you have done an analysis and comparison on his site on his site and position prior.

On your first appointment don't ever try and sell anything.
Give them something.
And make sure it's unique to them like you have done your research
and actually know who you're taking to unlike a door to door vendor.

Give them a solution for free, you're the SEO genius if you can fix that
you can fix anything and they'll tell their colleagues.

But remember your client is only interested in results not predictions.

I understood your situation bro, here is what happened to me in college :p My teacher was asking me do I have a job? I said nope. Thn he asked me what do I do for living I said I am an internet marketer, his face was arghhhhh atm, thn he asked me do I make money from internet I said yes I do. but he was oh well good for you. wtf I am making more thn him per month lol. don't try to explain thm to much just setup a site and take the money. its all good

Now if you want to reach those that can't get a recommendation you can of course go for it. But the remaining users are by no means irrelevant.
Explain to me how they are relevant for SEO. Basically they already have a recommendation and just need the number to dial the office and make an appointment. No need to target them. They quite probably already have the number from the person that recommended them. They've already made their decision. They are irrelevant for SEO. You need to target those that don't have a clue who to call. The ones that are searching for "profession - city". This is what you and the client needs to understand.

The best way to get them interested is just to explain that the market is there. "There are X people searching Google every month for proctologist in X city and only one doctor gets to be listed at the top of the results. We know how to give you the edge."

Then it's proposal time. I used to do 50 page proposals and have them professionally printed and bound, but for something like a local doctor a few pages explaining what you will do and why will suffice. It's not like with a doctor you'll have to go through a marketing department or a CEO.

I take the approach of showing him what it looks like when someone searches for him or his industry. Then ask do you know any of these people (ie his competitors). Then follow up with something along the lines of "if a person types in X, and this is what they see, how do you expect them to find you?". I then say right now he/she is getting 0% of the people that perform that search and tell him that I can make it so he can tap into it instead of it all going to his competition. Especially doctors.
When people want a doc they 1. google to see what is close, 2. see if they recognize any, 3. see what people say about them, 4. see if they take their insurance, 5. make an appointment.
Make the guy a good site and get a google places listing as well. That is how my clients tell me that most people find them anyway, most never make it to their site whether it looks awesome or not. But building a site is a cash cow nonetheless.

Mostly people look out for hospitals or google out the disease , i hardly think anyone would google out the doctors name ,Unless and until hes a very famous one .

I had similar kind of clients once. instead of going for generic keywords he wanted me to do SEO for his business name .

well in service industry i know one thing: "client is always right, do what ever he says"...

you did the right part explaining him all this but he don't want it that ways so thats okay make the things work his way...

he's actually making your work easiest... because there would be no competition on his name...
So my advice the money and give wa? the client wants...

Ok, if you want to go the "seo client" route, then here's a run down:

1. As stated earlier, use common man terms like "search engine marketing", "web traffic", "internet marketing".
2. Do some quick side by side analysis between them and one of their nearby competitors that has good ranking to show how they are getting their asses kicked.
3. Show them search numbers for their top keywords and simply how this traffic converts to exposure, which converts to potential sales/customers. Obviously you can't guarantee sales. The rest is up to them to offer a good service or product.
4. Show them some comparison numbers on traditional advertising vs. internet marketing.

Now I don't really like to mess with these idiots. I hate wasting my time on people who refuse to catch up to modern times.

Build your own landing pages and sell ads.
- Same or better monthly income.
- When you go to sell the ads, you already have the proof for their market. You page should be in the top 5 to sell ads.
- No more cold calls to seo clients. You control your destiny.
- You can still get seo clients when they see your landing pages. Its a double benefit.
- Landing pages can be monetized in multiple ways, such as adsense, etc..

The point here is: When you know your sh*t and you can rank for a keyword, why let some schmuck stand between you and your money. Take them out of the equation.

"The shortest point between A and B is a straight line."
