Strategies & tools to try mirror someone else's backlink profile, need help with

In my niche there's this leader that brings site after site to the top of SERPs ... I want to see if I could somehow mirror their strategies?

could you please help with advice on what tools I should use to what extent and what actions would help me produce similar results? I think somehow building a backlink profile, right? I understand that it's nearly impossible to get same backlinks as they do. But I could get baclinks from same or similar domains... I could also use their anchors to build up my backlinks, right? Would it be beneficial to try mirror that? What online free and/or paid tools could help me accomplish that?

Use Ahrefs to see their backlinks, sort by highest DR. Try to get the same backlinks

Dont just copy the backlink profile, also see which part your competitor is lacking. Address thise issue at your website
