dont do it via the robots.txt file - anyone can see that. Do it via the htaccess file - check out http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...os-why-doing-wrong-deindexing.html?highlight=

but if its from tumblr ? no robots or htaccess file . i have a pr 6 from there and i am willing to try it as private blog

If you hide them from google and bing then they are pointless. What you can do is make the blogs look like they are real sites with users and traffic and you should be ok.

I don't hide any of them. My current PBN strategy is to build up sites as real as possible, monetize them with different methods, promote them like I would a money site(automated), and if I get some extra money, I get some extra money.
I even spend a day a month writing other bloggers in the niche to write guest blogs for my PBNs(usually find niche writers on tumblr, blogger, WordPress, etc...: so the link goes to a nonmonetized site.
This strategy is easy right now as I have only 5 PBNs.

Just not make too much hide, try to build simple PBN's with different patterns.

I host my sites all over, I searched for a list of WordPress hosts and just have been working my way through the cheap ones.
5 PBNs is enough to rank me for a couple low-med comp keywords. Which will allow me to bank some money and build more PBN sites.
For every PBN site, I use around 6 super web2.0s, plus a handful of basic ones, plus some other links.
Remember a PBN is just part of your linking strategy.
