I had a meeting with a potential client for ORM services last week, and we got into a discussion about his company website. Since I thought the site looks pretty crap, I naturally tried up-selling web development services as well. To my surprised, he told me that the website is actually quite NEW and just launched not long ago. At that point, I was speechless for a few seconds. I shit you not, the website is so poorly designed & developed that I felt sorry for him. Images are distorted and amateur, small fonts that's hard to read, empty spaces everywhere, permalinks not properly set. Like common... how could he/she possibly live with that.

The reason why I want to bring this up to everyone's attention here is that offline marketing has a lot of potential to make big money, and the conditions are quite simple & real straight forward: BE HONEST & BE RESPONSIBLE. These opportunities can become long-term solid contracts and possibly even more referrals. You should be capitalizing each lead and opportunity, and do what you were paid for. Not some crap cookie-cutter site and jet with $xxx or whatever.

Agreed...

I find it sad that people put 3 keyword caps on SEO packages...

If you have an anchor text ratio that high you are screwed.

service providers both offline/online now a days find it difficult to make a sale that easy because people started analyzing things carefully,so as wiz said a good reputation always goes long and stands high above all.

I feel you man.. I have seen brand new sites too that almost made me cry.. and people pay tons of money for shitty sites. That's insane

recently i met a friend who runs some kinda pharmacy bizz (actual tablets..). He just came upto me and asked suggestion abt web designing and its charges. After a while i took a look at his site. to my surprise it was just 5 html pages with a java slider. there was literally no design. just basic ones with some css decoration and a logo. And he asked if he can get same kind of site for lesser cost.. i asked how much ru willing to spend.. he said around $600. ME: ??? ??? ?? WTF!! $600 for $30 website!!!!! WTF!!! Web development company in my locality wiped around $750 for that crap design!! and quality cant even come near free wordpress templates.

Moral: You can wipe huge with offline clients! (This is my real exp happened just 2 days back! i was very much upset bcoz the way few guys fool out people and bag their hard earned money :( )

I ended up giving a wordpress template site to him for free! :D

This is why in most major industries have ethics and standards committees (its not a perfect system, but its something!).

Not every company has the same skill level or ethics and without any type of regulations, you'll have a bunch of pump and dump operations that will only burn through every potential client they can find.

As for the OP's post. It sucks I know. The only thing you can do is continue to offer a high quality service and make a name for yourself that way. It's the only thing you can truly control in your business.

agreed you must give and provide what you advertise
because the reason clients avail services
is they trust you

I run into this problem every week, there is a "company" (husband and wife) that provides "professional websites" that look like I created them in my basic HTML class in high school. Still using tables for not tabular content etc. Stuff pisses me off all the time. But it makes it easy for me to snipe clients from their portfolio for my real brick and mortar company ;)

The sad part is that some people will read through all this and take it as proof that selling crap is a viable money making method. :(

im looking for a normal 9-5 job and i see alot of crappy websites of companys and i just cant apply because everytime i see this crappy shit on the internet im getting scared of the company.

and everytime i send them an email that their website is shit they dont respond anymore haha :D

I market myself as the seo guy that does not rip you off by showing clients HOW a crappy wannabe will try to con them and they like my honesty and give me referrals.

I just got a web design job for a lovely couple who are opening a clothing store, when I asked owner for his logo psd he never had it and had to pay his"designer" for it when I asked what he payed for logo he said $180 without psd file.

I knew right away that the person got his logo done on fiverr, same with the grand opening flyer they had made it is right there on fiverr as well.

I showed them how they got ripped off and now they will not make a marketing/printing/design move without consulting me first.

These offline business offers shit quality and I don't know how do they still keep their clients off.
I mean I would have been absolutely mad if my website was poorly structured by some company. Wouldn't have paid 1 cent.

BE HONEST & BE RESPONSIBLE

Couldn't agree with you more I find a few services even on here a bit deceiving for example, around the sale of Web 2.0 Blogs "selling PR5+ Web 2.0's" to an experienced SEO guy they would realise that the Web 2.0 platform is the actual PR4 and they're being sold fresh PR0 sites but this still continues on.
