Hi I was just wondering if it's still worth buying EMD's now to rank or if every domain I go for should be a Brand Name now?

We believe that the brand domains are best option
But EMD have not died yet.
Everything depends on the quality of the site.

Well, for me I never go for EMD before. Even for my Micro Niche sites. So I can make them Authority if I want in long run.

I never go for EMDs, but that's generally because I never put too much emphasis on one keyword.

All my EMD got slapped! Will never go for EMD. The ages of EMD is over. It's time to go for authority sites.

True believe it or not, the EMD period is over. Go for it if you wish to get hit like others. Authority is a better option now.

You know when they say EDM were penalized it sound to many as if there were blacklisted but that is not true.

EDM simply just rank higher than non EDM because of the keywords.

Let's assume that before the "devalue" of EDM which i prefer to call that way rather than penalty were ranked this way, just an assumption thou.

    EDM 80%
    Non EDM 55%

    After the devalue of EDM:

    EDM 55%
    Non EDM 55%

No preferential treatment anymore, all domain now rank equally, it is now based on the type of technique you use.

EMD slap (for commercial terms) was a reduction in the extra value given to them by Google.
It still seems to have a little value (though not enough for the old" sniper" tactics of an EMD and not much else to work any more)
Advertising in the first 720 vertical pixels of a URL was the single biggest SEPR's nerf of the last 3 months
From terrible if an ad is at the top, to "still not brilliant" if it is under the first 200 and up to 700 pixels from the top.
Of course you HAVE to advertise if you are in IM, but the fact remains - the biggest slap July to October 2012 wasn't EMD - it was overt commercialization.
So clever placement is best. and try to never have any ad block in the first 200 pixels at all.

I mention this because do many MFA sites were EMD's AND had advertising right at the top - sometimes just below the banner
If you owned one of these sites It would be easy to think the EMD slap was the cause of the sites SERP's slip - in most cases it would have been the advertising placement

EMD just lost value it does not mean its penalized. You just have to work harder to rank it.

Or a broad EMD where you can write atleast 20k words of content for or choose a little wider for example: of you want to write about walmart coupons. choose www.groceriestoreinfo.com or www.groceriesstorescoupons.com whatever. Build some sort of authority within the domain and your good to go.

And what would you say to sites that were slapped that had no advertisements at all? Let's say e-commerce sites for an example

John, your findings is correct but you just wrote EDM instead of EMD. Listening too much Electronic Dance Music? :D

Yes, EMD's are still good to buy. The recent EMD update we saw from Google was targeting EMD's with low quality content and poor links. As you might have seen my thread over the last couple of weeks, I registered a brand new EMD and within 10 days got it ranked to the first page and is now sitting at position 1 so EMD's are still good you just need to have quality content and quality links.

emd are still good just make sure you build a quality website, instead of just relying on only the domain to rank your site

My EMD MNS actually went up in the serps from #2 to #1 for its keyword. It's unique content and has a very clean backlink profile. IMHO, EMDs are still great if you're emphasising content and don't have spammy keywordcentric backlinks.
