Well, there may not be "illegal" action, but excessive or careless promotion through social media can indeed put your account at risk.
This occurs because the googlebot assesses both the behavior of people clicking on your ads, and their relationships.
Social media inherently is built on relationships -- users connect and know each other. And especially if the users are closer to the publisher than the advertisers, there is a good chance that at least a few might click on the ads excessively to "help" or in rarer circumstances, harm the publisher. As well, Google has become aware of click fraud rings using social media to operate below the radar.

Finally some publishers spam social media to build traffic and spam in any form is problematic.

In other words, there's nothing inherently wrong in using social media -- most bloggers and sites now have a social media component -- but excessive or careless use of social media, especially to promote traffic with the prime objective of having people visit AdSense-based sites and click on the ads -- is a risky proposition.

I would highly suggest you to lurk there and to post some threads if you want to go with this journey seriously, you will get handful of good tips. You can share something here also. Don't believe in everything you see in BHW and similar places. Better be on safer side. Experience voice.

Don't forget your long tail as well - Although these are not exact match keywords, long tail also contribute a fair amount of traffic to your site, and under certain conditions, they will still give you good earnings in the process, as the keyword used in search is related to the primary keyword that you are targeting.
