I have been told by some people that a good way to start my OM career is to start a personal blog. On the blog I would just document my progress on my SEO career. I will also practice on it, like ranking for different keywords and just trying some stuff out. Does anybody think this is a good idea? Or should I just start making random niche sites and practicing on those?

Build sites after doing proper KW research, get them ranked and monetize them. Most of us don't live an interesting enough life to get enough unique visitors to make a personal blog a financially feasible enterprise.

I guess you should start a blog on upcoming festival which is about to come atleast after 3-4 months. You may try for next 3 months..

You may put good contents, some link building, affiliate, adsense etc. I think this will be your good experience and there are chances to earn some money if you do things very carefully. I recommend to read as many possible ideas to you from this forum regarding SEO guides.

You could do both. Create a personal one that monitors your overall progress, but also have microniche sites for other topics.

Why? Because realistically, most people don't care what you're doing, so you're not going to be ranking for any keywords that are really good. Once your microniche sites are, though, you'll be able to record that and more and more people might want to see your progress, too, so then that site will also start ranking better.

Ranking for profitable keywords is what you should be aiming at, otherwise you will not be able to get anything out of it.

I know one girl who write about personal life, what she likes, what shops she likes, and she have over 3m/ month impressions on .wordpress.com blog...SO, you might try xD

You will be able to go back and look at it after several years, and it will be a nostalgic blog.

honestly, probably doesn't really matter.

Starting a personal blog sometimes is a good option for people because it's a project that's pretty easy to do so they might actually do it. And you could practice writing and optimizing etc without affecting someones bottom line. It wouldn't matter how many visitors you got because that's not the point of the site, you're doing it for practice and experience. You can get the same with a random niche site as well. Point being, if what you're looking for is practice and experience, it doesn't really matter how many visitors you get, it only matters that you do something

I've been considering this but under a pen-name.

Would it be bad if I used a fake-name for my "personal" blog?

There's something about the anonimity of a false-persona for me.

I think it would be a waste of your time if you do it for those reasons. If I were in your shoes I'd take a look at Matthew Woodward's blog: he does it for other reasons like helping others and brand himself.
So I'd get really professional first by testing SEO techniques on niche sites or blogs on different niches and build a personal blog about SEO when I'm really confident about selling SEO and making myself a product, an authority figure.
Best of luck mate!

I don't think has any particular use. Its more of a public online journal.
