I'm starting a new local business that delivers cannabis to customers in a recreationally legal state and trying to figure out the best way to get exposure.

There's a local free (free to public, costs to advertise in) weekly newspaper (roughly 600k weekly readers) with a section devoted to cannabis delivery companies which was going to be my largest ad buy (requested quote, waiting for prices).

I'm setting up social network accounts and a craigslist account to advertise and point to my website, and I suppose should start writing reviews anywhere I can (yelp, etc). The website is just a landing page with # to call to order and pics/info about what's currently in stock.

I found 2 local online directories dedicated to these delivery companies as well with both free and paid "feature" listings.

How would you go about promoting a site like this? I doubt adwords allows it...

I would go Social networking all the way... Use Facebook ads with custom audience :)

I would create a google listing and get it ranked for cannabis keywords.

Forum marketing would be a great way to obtain clientele, as well as social media.
Google My business might help, but I have no idea what you would place the category as. Who knows.. maybe you will be the first to have the category created and added.

I would be interested in helping you market such things, that is if you send some of the cannabis this way.. Kidding of course. Feel free to pm me, I'll help you out with what I can.
I know how big that industry is going to be.

I am pretty sure, getting on the news for this would be easy, be it even the local morning show to the TV. Even local blogs for the city you are in too. I think that would work synergistically with what the others said.

However, how do you make sure you don't get robbed/mugged easily delivering? I assume it isn't a carry state as well? Is there like some Cannabis business owners group even in another state to shoot ideas past?

Just trying to be helpful with all this and make sure you sidestep some problems early.

I am with Skyler, I want to do a cannabis site BEFORE Texas legalizes it, so I will be ready when it happens.

If ever there was a site to go in partners on, this is one.

    Completely off the mark...

For all you who have missed it, this is a video of three grandmothers who tried canabis for the frst time since it was legal for a university. Its a riot, and gives you an idea of how dangerous weed isn't.

Have you thought this through? I have no idea how laws work for this, but I assume that you just can not go pick up some weed and deliver it to your clients that you find on facebook. Maybe a better idea would be to check on the laws in your state first about courier services delivering weed and what licensing is involved. This will not be as easy as just posting some ads and making a blog. After you pass all licensing, pay bonds, insurance get a bank account (if you even can get all this stuff) then I would suggest you go directly to dispensaries and offer your services. There would be no better referral than to their patients, that are buying their product.

These are the existing companies already doing it: http://greenlightwashington.com/placecategory/delivery_service/

As far as being robbed, I'm only selling small amounts (quarter oz at a time) so I'd just give it to them if there was danger. (I know 2 people who were beaten and robbed for 2-3 ounces)

As far as the state laws, I have a medical card and can carry up to 1.5 lbs at a time, but I'm only targeting 1/8's and quarters. Without a medical card you're allowed 1 oz for adults 21 or older.

So far, buying inventory has been very smooth, there's a private medical patient marketplace in WA and a rating/review system for each sale and lbs of top shelf range from $1700-$2400 for the best of the best. We meet at the mall or grocery stores to transact.

The other popular delivery services charge around $100/quarter oz with no discount for quantity. So $400/ounce when I can buy it for $110-$150.

I was going to sell up to 1/2 ounce max, but you can mix and match 4 different strains (1/8th each) and get a $20 discount on the second 1 quarter oz.

Edit:: Also police are outlawed from investigating marijuana crimes or cooperate with federal authorities regarding mj. They can give you a ticket for smoking in public, but there are articles where they had to give back pot to people who were selling on the street. Another guy had his weed confiscated and destroyed a couple years ago and the county had to pay him back cash out of the general fund.

We also have state run marijuana stores but they tax it so much it costs $40/gram lol 4x more than street prices. They also run out of stock quickly.

This is a serious emerging business, and the demand for delivery of medicinal marijuana is going to increase exponentially as the social stigma of smoking pot wears off.

Of course it s going to be regulated and controlled, and to participate in this industry you re going to have to meet all the necessary requirements. All of this is for the good of the industry.

The fact is that this is a niche emerging from illegal to legal status, and SEO for such a site is going to be very interesting.

As soon as pot smokers don't run amok and cause all kinds of problems, more and more states will legalize at least the medicinal use of marijuana.

IN time, this will just be another industry, and I want to be in on the ground floor.

The regulations are only partly defined at the moment. The voters past a law giving the liquor control board 1 year to figure out how to sell marijuana, and the politicians extended the term because they can't agree on anything. So currently it's past the 1 year limit and they won't make a decision for several more months.

I watched the same thing happen when dispensaries started popping up. I was growing medical at the time and wanted to start selling but chickened out. Now I see the same thing happening with delivery services, and there are tons of newspaper articles about it and how easy/good quality it is.

Currently there are thousands of unregulated dispensaries in Seattle for medical patients, none of them are technically legal, but they've been around for years now and have dozens of lbs of product on hand at any time and normal business hours.

News interviews from the cops about people posting on craigslist say the cops said they didn't care because it's just small quantities.

Edit:: I work as a programmer in seattle, believe me, I've thought long and hard about this.

I was trying to find you the link for your local state small business development center, but I can't crap out links since I am too new here and must be a spammer sleeper cell. But I looked for you and cause they are federally funded they are unable to advise you of it.

Anyhow what about a pot and food take out delivery service? Don't you always get hungry with that stuff? Don't look at me,I am hip to be square. Someone will write you insurance someplace. Even if it is a surplus market line.

^ I thought about a weed catering business, like cheese trays but with a variety of buds for small, private parties.

There are vaporizer rentals here lol for tourists you can rent it by the day. There's marijuana tours and all kinds of businesses sprouting up.

You should have purchased the domain www.stonerSEO.com

Just a hint, I don't have a problem with anybody who uses any substance but if you are trying to promote your business, other business owners may be concerned with spending large amounts of money on SEO services carried out by a recreational drug user who has been arrested on more than one occasion.
Don't take it personally as I too have a Criminal Record and have done may fair share of Drugs in the past, but my personal and business life are separated and are almost impossible to connect unless somebody knows exactly what to look for.

    I have a bunch as well, find420seattle.com bigbudseattle.com organic420seattle.com and a bunch others.

I don't see any reason to partner with anyone cause I've already spent my own $ on inventory, and I have to do all the actual deliveries myself. I'm employed so just saving up paychecks to get more stock before running a big ad buy in the newspapers.

Wow.. This is one of the more serious conversations about weed, I have seen in a LOOOONNNGGG time.. And most the time I was "sharing" with friends when we had them lol... Good luck to all going into this field.. It should have never been illegal in the first place - government banning what they can't tax... Now when they see the $$ it is coming back around, and being taken over by bureaucrats.. I hope they look at releasing the thousands of young people they put in prison for such a stupid reason.. I know it was illegal when they were arrested, but some of the sentences were just ridiculous..

Here's to Green Days in the US,

But it is dangerous, on multiple levels, and giving granny dope to smoke could be considered elder abuse. It causes paranoia and hallucinations in some people, an long term has a very long list of bad health effects, all of which will be paid for by the government, hence the taxpayers. No, it's not the "end of the world", but legalizing pot is certainly going to give more disciplined countries a competitive advantage in all areas (productivity, quality of life, health, safety & security, financial health, etc...) In concrete terms, what it means is that authoritarian countries that suppress their people in all aspects of their life will now be competing with a United States that is more stoned, more often, so whatever advantages that we might have over them due to the fact that we are not enslaved to our government will be lost due to the fact that a significant percentage of the population will be enslaved to their drug, and underperforming 24/7 for the rest of their lives. More traffic accidents, more work-related accidents, less efficiency, etc...

I know a guy that got his arm cut off at work due to him being stoned on the job, and he gets a check now every day of his life until he dies. He was proud of himself when he told us the story. His employers never found out that he was stoned at the time of the accident. He and his partner "smoked a bowl" prior to cleaning a room-sized printing press, and his stoned partner turned the machine "On" while his arm was inside it, then lied and said he didn't know how the machine turned on.

School bus driver that drives your kids to & from school is stoned. Urinalysis tests ever "x" months, and your employer demanding that you pee into a cup, on demand, like you are a felon on parole. Or you will lose your job if you refuse. Blackmail, when someone's urine will be "dirty" and someone at their work knows it. "Give me "x" or I'll let your boss know you'll fail a UA if they take it today." all sorts of crazy and paranoid situations will arise when dope becomes as common cigarettes.

Obviously you know nothing about weed. You are aware that "Refer Madness" isn't a documentary, right?
In what way were they abused? They were grown ups who made a conscious decision to, under safe conditions, to get a little buzz. Not unlike you stopping off for a beer. Except unlike beer, instead of having your mind go to sleep and your body keep right on going with any guidance system if you over indulge, if you overdo weed you will go to sleep.

Obviously you know nothing about weed. I have never had a hallucination on weed, and no one know I ever did.

There are 65 million weed smokers in the US. The majority of them lead normal productive lives, just like people who drink casually. Where is all that under performing now?

Enslaved is a strong word, it implies that you can not do without the "drug" if you run out. You know what happens to a weed smoker when he/she runs out of weed?

They do without until they can get more. They do not go on a stealing spree to feed their habit, because it is not addictive. They wait for payday, and buy it.

Based on what? How do you figure this? With the number current smokers, why aren't these epidemic now? Could it possibly be because responsible people don't drive or go to work stoned or drunk maybe?

How is efficiency affected? If the employee is not stoned at work, then efficiency should not suffer. If they are they should get fired, just like a drunk should. Problem solved.

I call bullshit on this one. OSHA requires tag out/lock out procedures to be done on this kind of equipment when it is taken out of service. An industrial accident that maimed an employee under these circumstances would have involved an OHSA AND an Insurance Carrier investigation that would have involved drug tests of everyone in the vicinity of the accident, unless that company does not have an insurance carrier.

Do you mean to tell us that an OSHA investigator sat down with an employee who told him/her that a piece of equipment turned itself on and thy were the only person in that vicinity, that investigator would call them a liar to their face and tell them to get a lawyer. And NO insurance carrier is going topay oiuiut LTD for an industial accident without drug tests. Its not good business.

Setting that all side, even then the problem was not marijuana, but rather that these two workers went to work impaired and were stupid enough to work with someone impaired too. Their judgement and work ethic was the problem, and they could have gotten impaired on anything from paint to Jack Daniels.

I do not even know what you are trying to say here, but if it were legal, then testing would have to be able to determine if the person being tested were under the influence of weed when the accident happens. This would be accomplished by testing the level of the active ingredient of Marijuana, THC in the sample submitted for testing.

Since the standard test used today is the Duguenois-Lavine test that detects other compounds in Cannabis, called canaboids. This test is at best, only an indicator of the potential use of weed, because several things can cause false positives, but it seldom produces a false negative.

If marijuana were legal, then the testing would have to be for being under the influence, not just recent use, and these test are extensive and expensive.

BUT in the scenario above, the worker will be better protected, because today you are "dirty" if you smoked a joint a month ago, and someone can blackmail you who saw it. If testing were done to test for being under the influence, this blackmail would not be possible because the THC would be long gone.

If someone came to work under the influence of ANYTHING that impaired them, they deserve to get fired. If you have an unproductive employee they deserve to get fired. Responsible people do not do that shit, and a LOT of responsible, productive people smoke weed.

And we haven't even touched on the medical benefits that have started to be documented.

And lastly, do you know how and why weed became illegal in the US?

    Code:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_State_Narcotic_Drug_Act
    In the 1930's

In other words, it was a bullshit run like Obamacare.
