just curious if anyone knows if there is anything I can do about this situation?

Come to find out that an ebook I have written and yet to fully advertise has been re-written by one of the peeps I was having review it. They watered down the info and re-wrote different parts of it but have exact same layout of steps, etc. Since its re-written do I have any rights here, or am I screwed? The bastard beat me to advertising it as well!

That's a really fucked up situation, you can't do much about it. If people notice that it's similar to your ebook, try to advertise it as your ebook was the first, and add some more value to it, like write an extra chapter for your original ebook. That way you can tell the people that the copycat is not worth a dime, and your original product is much better, contains extra info etc.

There is really nothing you can do. Any complaints make you the kid in the dorm room who had napster stolen by his roomie.

All you can do is blackhat revenge. Find his web marketing address, prstorm it to hell. Spam it all over the place where admins will contact his host. Get it de-listed by all means. With all these links all over the place, complain to his registrar about the spaming, if the registrar gives a shit they make take some action.

Unfortunately, if he chooses to get another domain then you would have to go through the whole process again. Your hands are really tied.

Spend your energy promoting your product or making it better. Wasting your time on revenge won't help. There's still this asshat that stole a version of my software and has been reselling it for a year now. *I* receive complaints from his customers about problems.. I just tell them to dispute the charge with their bank and to buy mine.. If I let my anger consume me , I wouldn't have time to create new things or make more money.

...Change your marketing to include rubbishing 'his' product. Make it known you know about it but that if people purchase it, they are missing the most important 'secret' and will only be getting part of the deal, which is virtually useless, unless they purchase your much improved version.

It's a little difficult to be precise when I don't know what your product is but that is the gist.

As a final piece of satisfaction I personally would intimate that the crap he has stolen is just that, crap! You were always working on something better. This was just phase one and merely part of the brainstorming before finally settling on the new version.

Finally, don't forget what you wrote in your original post here, "They watered down the info..." If it's watered down, say so. Who wants to purchase a watered down anything? Write it cleverly so it doesn't sound like sour grapes, rather you don't want people to waste their money on an incomplete version...and next time get an agreement signed to the effect that the reviewer agrees that what he is about to review is the work of workfromhome11, or whatever your real name is and as such is copyright. They agree as part of their priviliged viewing that they have absolutely no rights to any of the work.

Finally, post 'his' version as a free download on all torrent websites to ensure he makes no money from it and make sure your new version does not sound anything like the old version.

Great answer magician, has a little bit of everyones advice. I was thinking like and adword campaign don't buy this widget untill u read this type of stuff. but your answer covers all avenues.

Call him out on the forum where he got a review copy and notify the mods.

Yep it has all pretty much been said, this is real life and not a computer game or movie.

This stuff happens and success comes from implementing the best reply to this nonsense not from desperately hoping to the stars that 'mean stuff' never happens to you in the first place.

Now: he's having to go to some effort to sell his stupid book, exploit his marketing.

I defy anyone to demonstrate with figures how any time spent hurting him anywhere but his wallet, where it doesn't also pay you, is not a waste of time.

I fully sympathize with your situation. That would piss me off to no end.

Maybe you can use it to your advantage in some sort of marketing twist - my ebook is so good, this guy tried to copy it! - or something like that. Price war would be bad for both of you. Or put up a lot of reviews doing a point-by-point comparison and showing that your product is superior. 9/10 people recommend my book over his! etc. A crappy product makes you look even better in comparison.

I think the truth is it's all about marketing and not
really about the product as most ebooks and digital
products for that matter suck - and they end up
here and few people actually read them.

We see the guru launches where they take a
fluffy product and promote it to death and sell
$#!+ on a stick for $97 or another price point
that ends in 7 because they know it test the
best - it's all about marketing your product better
than his - but spending energy to slam him will
more or less be seen as "jealous rage".

The only way to truly get back is black hat
as long as you cannot be traced or it will
come back to haunt you - long term.
