Spinning Wheel Of Death?

Hey Guys! Every once in a while I get the spinning wheel on my iMac. It freezes every once and a while and I was wondering if anybody has any solutions that would fix this or what the hell is it. I have virus protection but I'm thinking maybe I need more memory. Thanks
