Some speed or optimization related issue.

Well i started a new blog http://www.thedailyjunction.com on wordpress. i optimized it with the help of gtmetrix wordpress optimization techniques https://gtmetrix.com/wordpress-optimization-guide.html. All thing goes right except "defer parsing of javascript" and "leverage browser caching". i searched on google for the issue and tried installing many plugins like WP Deferred script, Speed booster pack, Async javascript, and pagespeed 100, eventually what happens is they all fcuked up my site entirely.. i was lucky i had a backup yesterday so i had to restore it many times. i also tried editing functions.php many time but nothing happens. Can anybody here please tell me how to optimize for those mentioned above. in addition, i am using newspaper 8 theme (nulled) "local news" demo.
