They are definitely not a ranking factor but they do help not sure upto extend but as I said they do help your ranking.

Not a direct ranking factor. Can help with social validation and indirect authority boosting. As in today's age a company with little to no social activity can be potentially viewed as suspect. Social media is fucking worthless in SMB B2B

Social media falls under the same roof as text mentions (mention of site name w/o hyperlink).
While it doesn't carry the same weight as backlinks do, Google does pay attention to it, and it does help with building authority towards your website.

exactly! Nothing more to say. Create some social media buzz to justify the new links that pop up in googles eyes.
when google detects your website is going "viral" its absolutely normal that new links pop up because other blogs or newspapers might write about it...So google can not raise a penalty for a lot of new links comming from a viral trend. Thats the idea behind it.
