There`s a correlation between activity in your official page in FB and number of people who requests about you in Google. So promotion in social networks can indirectly effect your SERP position. Just recall it it when you think about Panda, Penguin or Tiger. Traffic attracted from FB or G+ imho is goddamn new SEO.
Old SEO is dead. New one is based in unique viral content multiplied with social networks.

Another thread with no analysis stating that social signals are the shit and backlinks ("old SEO") are dead.

No old SEO is not dead, as I still rank my sites with links, therefore it still works. The only thing different these days is you get a lot of newbs who know very little yet talk as though they are experts, and they tend to be saying "SEO is dead".
