Here is a little tip for people who sell websites to local businesses, etc.

I've found this to be quite succesful, and I can almost guarantee it has increased my sales.

What I do is, before I approach a business owner in person, I call the business, ask to speak to the owner, ask them about thier products or services they offer and pretend to be pretty interested, ask them if they have a website that I can check out before I make my decision. If they say no, I act a bit uninterested and find a way to end the call.

Rinse and repeat this the next week w/ a friend calling them (preferably female if your male or vice versa).

I then do my sales pitch in person, and always remind them of the sales they are losing w/out having a website.

Just a little tip that doesn't cost anything to do, plants the seed in the biz owners mind that they need a site.

    Hope it helps

Great idea! I had the same idea years ago (for merchant processing) but never took action. It would almost be worth hiring a couple of telemarketers to do the set up calls for you. It would have to be someone you really trusted and it couldn't be a girl friend because they could really screw you over if your broke up.

I really like creative, gray hat stuff like this.

I had an autodialer company years ago and I recorded a telephone ringing and when I got on the phone with a prospect I would play the ringing in my speakers (several times to emulate several phone calls). I would then talk about how hot my dialers and phone scripts were and my recorded rings were my social proof. A lot, and I mean a lot of my prospects said something like, "man you're a busy guy!" or "do you need to get that?". No Joe, you're my most important customer. :)

I even had a recording of a "Fed Ex" guy making a pickup. It was just a recording of me talking in the "background" and after I played it I'd say to my prospect, "excuse me just a second"..."YES, it's the 8 boxes over there in the corner, I'll have 10 more tomorrow.... Thanks" Sorry, that was the fed ex guy!

I know it sounds kind of corny but it worked.

FAKE IT TIL YOU MAKE IT (OR UNTIL THE FEDS BUST YOU)

That maybe the case, but I saw something on someone's facebook fanpage wall where someone said quote: "i might be old fashioned but i like to see who i'm dealing with. do you have a real picture of yourself anywhere?"

So you could use the same angle with fan pages.
