makes me genuinely sad to come across great domain names that have held and not developed for literally decades.. all because some asshole(s) think they're on a goldmine and someones gonna come along and offer a few grand for it

oh well.. that's life.

Literally decades? Really not sure how many of the 250k websites that existed in 1996 that you would want to use anyway, at least not of those not still being used.

Many websites were closed down in 1995 to 1997. There is a 55% chance that the domain is being wasted. Per day 12,000 to 16,000 website were closed down. Well, they are good aged domain.
