So, I bought an Alienware MX17 R4 - Biggest mistake ever!

Mine is working fine from 2009 
Planning to get a new one soon. Never spend too much money on your laptop, because it'll eventually get outdated. Better laptops come into market every day, so buy one which is not so overpriced and will do the job for you. And as far as gaming is concerned, get a desktop man. You can get a better performing desktop in that range.

Hi mate even I had bought the same system an year ago or so. It was running fine for 4 months but then it started to lag n hang often
so I called them up and thy were quick to respond but none of the technicians whom they outsourced even bothered to check what the real problem is. They never even turned my system on to check if it is even causing any problems. They just came with 5 parts and he randomly replaced ehat sink and ram for the first time. Problem didn't fix then second visit motherboard replaced. So they came around 5 times and each time they replaced some or the other thing
after 2 months of replacements nothing was fixed and there was no hardware left to replace coz all the hardware were replaced
worst part is they kept telling me these are original new parts but bloody ass holes replaced with a refurbished parts
so in span of 2 months my laptop had lost all the genuine parts and was left with only crap refurbished parts but yet problem wasn't solved
I called their customer support and said I want to talk to the senior since there is nothing left to replace and they connected me and I threatened them either to replace with new laptop or refund money or face the charge
next day they called me up and said : unfortunately your model is out of stock so we only have a next model with 8gb more ram n more ghz
I was more than happy to take and the new model was 600$ costlier than my old one so you can say I was in profit
I thought of continuing with new laptop but fortunately one of my friend wanted to buy the same laptop so he offered to buy the new one from me but 300$ less price
We both were in a win win situation here coz I earned 300$ more than what I had bought at and he saved 300$
so I bought a Mac and he was happy for 3 months using my Alienware but after 3 months even he started facing the same issue and currently he is hustling with their customer support . I really feel bad for him but it was his choice although I had warned him

my boyfriend bought this same laptop and during an update one day it shut and wouldn't come back on. had to put the video card in the oven and that actually worked but only for a couple uses. now its on a shelf collecting dust. unfortunately he got off ccraigslist so no warranty. hes just sol. makes a really decent paper weight tho. they're pretty heavy

Not true. I have 2 Acer Laptops -> both quad core with 4 GB RAM for the last 2 years and never had any problems.
I only cleaned them once, and that time was because my screen got fucked up and the cleaning was for free included when I bought the new screen + replacement at the store. I have noticed that Acer is a really strong brand when it comes to laptops and not overpriced as fuck like Dell is.
HP on the other hand is the shittest ever -> after 3-6 months you can't even watch a movie with VLC, because it will overheat and shut down. I experienced this on my gf's HP laptop and she had a good one (quad core/4gb ram). I had to buy her a cooler lol otherwise the laptop was completely useless. And that wasn't because she wasn't cleaning the vents. She did 2 times in 5 months and still same shit.

Apple products are very well built and work very well. I'd pay (and do) pay a premium for them since I trust they will last.My iPhone and iPad both run flawless and I have never had one issue. Would pay for them again. A MacBook Pro will be my next electronic purchase actually.
Apple support is also flawless in my opinion. I had a non Hardware related question and they were super cool and nice about explaining things to me.

Any serious gamer is going to lol at apple. There is a reason you don't see kids playing macs at competitions. For casual gaming sure, but building your own with serious power supplies, graphics cards (I run a r9-290x), etc. is the way to go.
Sure Alienware is OP for what you get. Big time... but they are owned by Dell now and I would expect much more than that crappy support your getting.
Did they only replace the MB and keep the CPU?
They don't give techs CPU's I think as it is literally the only thing Dell has to pay near full price for.

I just finished building my PC and it cost around $1,600
Specs - 4.4Ghz (can OC to 5.0+) 8GB ram and a GTX 760 GPU
With this it will run just about anything on at least high (idk about ultra).
Never buy already built PC's they just up the price on you for nothing.

I thought so too until my 2011 MBP broke with the exact same issue a ton of other people had with around the same time of use. So much for quality of build that lasts. I then went on the path of the hackintosh and not looking back.

HSF cleanouts depend a lot on the environment and design of the laptop. Here is one our shop did on a year and a half old laptop a couple days ago
It finally got to the point it would shut off after about 20 minutes. Surprised it didn't do more damage but we might not know for a few weeks.

Everything from dell I've ever owned is garbage. Alienware hasn't been decent since before dell bought them out forever ago. Now it's just more crap. I've had 4 dell laptops and they all only lasted a year. I had an alienware pc and it only lasted a year. All of those laptops could cook a steak. The HP, gateway, and toshiba laptops i've owned all ran insanely hot too.
The ONLY laptop I've put through its paces and only ran mildly warm under heavy gaming and video rendering has been lenovo. Not only have their laptops run better and cooler than anyone else, their extended warranties are 3x cheaper than dells. I had 3 years of on-site repair coverage with all parts and labor covered that i've only actually had to use once because of a cracked screen a while back. My sisters yoga has been going strong, and I recently grabbed a flex on sale as i wanted something lighter for working while traveling. No problems at all.

Because zero problem experience since 2010.
Only got virus problem. And I'm lazy to format, then I just bought new one.

You can't really label an entire manufacturer as bad. The major manufacturers have several different lines of laptops and desktops. They have the very cheap, mostly plastic lines you find at big box stores and then they have business grade machines, with metal sub-frames, and better components typically leased to Corporations. The difference in quality is easy to recognize when they are compared side by side. Everything from the hinges to the keyboards are very different. If you have a source for business grade laptops you're much better off to pick them up even second hand than to purchase the new plastic junk offered by big box stores. Business off-lease laptops are our best sellers when we adequately explain the benefits and compare them side by side to the big box laptops.
