Sneaky Anchor Text

Hi there people

There are some authority sites out there that just do not take your link. We all probably see it on a daily basis. I was recently trying to post at a good site and tried out something sneaky just to see if it will work. I am not talking about sites that take in comments and they say - awaiting moderation. I am talking about sites that let you post but later edit or delete your post when the moderator sees it.

I used a period, that is a full stop . as anchor text and posted my comment. This comment appears immediately. I have posted many other comments at this site only to see the post appear without the link.

In this case however, the link stayed because they could not clearly see the . that I had linked.

Now, I know this sort of anchor text is useless but has anyone tried any mass linking like this. I suppose hundreds of links like this from quality forums ought to mean something. Also, can they get you in any sort of trouble?

Yeah, that's an old trick. You can also use an emoticon to hide your link. The link will count as a link, just not with good anchor text so it's worth it if it's the only way you can get a link on that page.

Anchor text is nice but not the end of the world. Google 'click here' for a prime example

Two random questions about using emoticons as anchor text..

How important is having related anchor text?

Do the google spiders know that your hiding the link on purpose?

It helps but it's not do or die and it's good to have random anchor text thrown in because nothing is more suspicious than having every single one of your links have the same anchor text.

How could they possibly know that? They don't even know that YOU are doing the linking.

how about a blank space as anchor text

or change the color of your anchor text to match the background...

A lot of these links that I got with . as anchor text recently got indexed and my site has been slammed. I went from the first page to the 8th. Not sure if it is the dance or what?

It's been two days already. Could it be that Google penalizes heavily for this type of linking. I mean, they must know that links like this have to be sneaky and thus not white hat???

Any opinions?

If that was the case then anybody could put their competition out of business. It must be something else.

That is true. This argument is used pretty much everywhere. It could be that although I suspect Google could be a little more intelligent when it comes determining if it was your work or your competitor putting you out of business.

I guess I should have used proxies when I put out these links, something that I did not do. Google can look at where my site is coming from, where these links are coming from and put the two things together as something fishy.

Anyways, it is out of my hands now I guess.

it's the dance. keep linking at the same rate as before and you'll be fine.

Yes, because the argument makes sense. Offsite factors might not help your seo but they are unlikely to damage it because they are out of your control. Though if the on site factors indicate your site is of poor quality, google might hold offsite factors against you.

How exactly would using proxies help? Unless you were posting on google groups or some google hosted service, Google doesn't know the IP you posted these messages from. Google can't track what you do outside of their web properties, not yet. Unless you use the google toolbar or Chrome.
