I've been kicking around the idea of marketing via text messages to cell phones.

Has anyone tried that and if so could you share some of your successes and failures?

i'm looking into this myself. and i was told that you must be careful when using sms to advertise your services, as it can be called 'spamming' and will get you into trouble.
 
yep, i just did a quick look-up... the customer must be able to opt-in and opt-out at will, otherwise you risk trouble.

just found one place in arizona that charges $1,000. a year to send messages to your existing clients (good for restaurants) to tell them about your upcoming specials. not good for services with no repeat business.

i will look into that 'text 3456 to get more info', could be good for a few new customers.
 
There is a program called Text my readers that cost around $100 that is a SMS autoresponder. It works for US Cell companies only though.
 
I know it has to be 100% opt in but there are ways to send them anonymously and that would be the route I would take.

There are a lot of third parties that offer the service, I would be interested in just doint the sending myself in a black hat way.
 
I am from a third world country and i can easily get a sim card which is not on my name. The international sms charges are also very low, its like few cents here. I can send unlimited messages each day. I am thinking of advertising some ClickBank products via sms to US numbers. Any suggestions. I am also available for partnership if anyone wants to partner with me on this.
 
I am not sure now mature mobile marketing is in other countries...but in the U.S I don't think the market is mature enough for affiliate marketing via sms...but on the other hand of you have a local business then it would be great.

I believe it is the wave of the future... take a look at the phones that are most popular... they all have internet access. I'm not johnny cell phone so I am not going by what I use but you look at the demographic of 18 - 24 year olds and 80% of them are texting and surfing from their phones all the time.
 
18-24??? ha! i see 14 year olds with phones!

i wanna try sms advertising, but you still gotta run regular ads in the papers to get people to call and get the info. not sure if the response is any better than paper ads.

It is actually the wave now ... but right now I don't think it is good for affiliate marketing...

I am very big on texting but not many people are going to pull their credit card out and use their mobile browsers to buy once again on the other hand of you are using text base marketing to market for brick and mortar business....now is the time.
 
I just came back from a holiday over in indonesia. When I was there I used a indo phone/local number. I rec a few of these reply back things. it can be done. Also to note.. people over there carry 2 or 3 phones mainly because they cant carry over their number.. but my only thought that if you try this in the US your gonna run into the problem with the people that dont have unlimited sms. if I rec one and was charged for it, I would be pissed off... So as stated above.. perhaps the US market is not ready for this..but I do see it as the next wave to make $$$$
 
Guys there are many services online where you can create an account, and they give you a number where people can opt in by sending a particular keyword. I would forget about using real phones and sims etc for SMS marketing...make use of these services. When people text your keyword to your number, it works like an autorepsonder. And after the initial message, you can send your "list" any message you want...
On top of this, the company pays you a percentage of the premium fee..

The trick comes in to try and build that list...

A good way may be a twist on the ASDA method mentioned here before...print flyers out saying they can claim a free $200 (ASDA/Wallmart whatever) voucher by texting the KEYWORD to your premium number. Hand the flyers out at ASDA/or wherever stores. When people text the number, they get a message back with a link to a CPA offer (maybe an email submit) to win an ASDA/whatever voucher.
BAM: You just killed three birds with one stone...you get about 40% of the premium SMS charge, you earn CPA commissions when people complete the offer, and you building on your SMS list to market to later!
 
I'm working with a major SMS provider in the text message marketing business in US. What makes text messaging so effective is the fact that existing customers have opted-in to a list and agreed to accept messages from a particular business. I personally think Black Hat techniques are a waste of time and will be short lived. Carriers will cut you off quickly for this kind of spam and pissed off mobile users aren't really going to be buying much.

With that said, there is tons of money to be made in selling SMS services as a legitimate business. A large % of small business users will be using it in the next few years.

there is this "youmint" website you have just got to register giving in your correct contact number. all you have got to do is readthe SMS you recieve and for every SMS you read you get paid.
