A brand-safe anchor is one that feels organic, like it belongs in the sentence, not like it was jammed in for SEO.

Example:
If we’re linking to Ahrefs, skip the keyword-stuffed anchors like “best backlink checker tool.”
Instead, go with something like:

“…according to Ahrefs…”
or
“A recent study by Ahrefs found…”

It’s clean, natural, and builds authority without raising red flags. The kind of link that earns trust, and sticks.

but we still hyperlink the word(s) "Ahrefs" / "According to Ahrefs"? Or we just leave it/them unlinked, which is what SEOs call mentions (as opposed to anchor like we do it with backlinks)?

Great Question - and yes, we absolutely do hyperlink those phrases.

“Ahrefs” or “According to Ahrefs” aren’t just mentions, they serve as the actual anchor text.

The difference is in intent and execution.
Instead of forcing in keyword-stuffed anchors like “best backlink checker”, we’re linking naturally within the flow of the sentence, the way an editor would do it in a real publication.

It’s still a backlink. It just doesn’t scream SEO.
That’s what makes it brand-safe, trustworthy, and effective long-term.
