I’ve spent over 15 years working with top companies—designing hundreds of apps and websites, building design systems from scratch, and training entire teams.

Then, I was laid off.
That was 4 years ago.

Since then, I’ve applied to countless jobs with no success. I tried going full-time into freelancing (which I’d done part-time before), but the reality is… it hasn’t been enough to keep my family afloat.

Now, at over 40, with kids to feed, I find myself wondering if I’ll ever get another job in my field. The struggle has reached the point where even putting bread on the table is becoming a challenge.

I still have the skills, the knowledge, and the experience—what I don’t have is a way to turn them into stable income anymore.

If anyone here has advice—whether it’s about breaking back into the job market, pivoting to a new career, or finding sustainable freelance work—I would deeply appreciate it.

Sorry to hear about that man... What about getting a physical job for now, just to have something stable going in terms of incoming?

It will be easier and less pressure on you if you have something coming in from a job and use your free time to work on getting back to what you really enjoy doing

Man, that’s rough, but you still got something valuable — 15 years of real experience is no joke. If full-time jobs aren’t hitting, I’d go hard on niche freelancing where you can charge premium, like design audits, fixing messy design systems, or mentoring junior designers. Also, tap LinkedIn hard, post case studies weekly, comment on big design threads so recruiters see you. Sometimes it’s about getting visible again, not just sending apps into a black hole.

As you have 15 years of experience in designing websites and apps, you can now take the advantage of AI and take your work to next level. What took you an year earlier could be done in a month now. You can also manually approach businesses with your custom solutions. If you want to do B2B solutions, then create a professional website and update your LinkedIn profile. You can use your experience to your advantage.

You should first get job. Online side hustles take time before you start earning. Job ensures that family expenses are covered.

That’s a tough spot to be in, but your experience is still a huge asset. You might have more luck by leveraging your network directly, reaching out to past clients or colleagues, and positioning yourself for contract roles that could lead to something permanent. It could also be worth exploring niche consulting or specialized training offers where your skills solve urgent problems for a specific audience.

I'd recommend you find a sales job in your niche. For example, find an offer in design/website/systems creation and work for a commission. You already have the expertise and a solid foundation; all you need now is proper training/framework.
GL.
