Moving forward, you should conceive of some programmatic way in checking keyword difficulty—or you'll likely never get anywhere as an SEO. I don't mean that as an insult, just a practical reality. You HAVE to know the difficulty of the keywords you're ranking for, otherwise how would you ever know what methods you're using to be effective. For instance, lets say I was trying to rank for something like "pink golf course range finder accessory cord"—that's so niche-specific that you'd likely be able to rank for that keyword fairly easy. If you wanted to rank for just 'golf accessories' however, you'd likely have to invest a LOT of time and money, and even then it'd be an uphill battle. I say this example because if you want to be successful at ranking, you HAVE to be able to quantify the differences in keywords like these. You can't rely on common sense, feelings, or suspicions—you need numbers.
With that in mind, I'd say that your problem is very likely that you've chosen a keyword that has an extreme amount of competition. ~12K/mo keywords aren't typically easy to rank for, and most I've seen within the app/tech/etc niches are almost impossible unless you've got some serious resources.
