Should I Wear My Rolex?

I have a Lexus GS300 from 2001, looking to upgrade to a 2009 GS450h within 6 months, yes, as my car isn't "proportionate" to my watch, I'm aware. Also, I'm not an idiot, I'm aware of what I've posted.

mickyfu - What's the issue? Sounds like you're pretty pissed off. Besides people calling me a fake everyone's been quite calm, I don't see why that bothers you so much. It's a genuine question. To give you an example, as you're witnessing first-hand, some on the forum don't even believe that I have a Rolex because of my age (and my $50 Facebook request doesn't help), the same issue appears when selling in real life. People are taken aback by my age and that I'm selling something to them. The watch adds maturity to my age (you cannot disagree about that part). If I'm selling a service for $799-$1499 a month, and I'm just "some random teen" it's often much less believable. But best of luck to you.

Yeah, anyone can make sales wearing anything, but there's the emotional effect. Mark Zuckerberg has closed deca-million dollar deals wearing a bathrobe and flip-flops, I made sales without any Rolex which is how I got to the point to have one in the first place. Good work though.

If a "young" kid (whatever his age) comes up to me tomorrow morning with a solid business/product plan i would hire/buy on the spot! Adding flashy things doesn't mean sh*t ... and sure will not increase your maturity!

OK you get my vote! I was just testing, wanted to know if you're really what you say you are, or you are just another kid who is a time-waster... Your patience and your writing style is great! I think your future is really good!

I bought a fake one once. No-one noticed that it was a rolex (you have to get pretty close to read rolex unless the person is really showing it off - really how often do you really look at someone's watch?), but what people did see was a big flash gold watch and whenever I wore it the price of everything went up and it was a beacon to every scammer and salesperson under the sun never felt safe once I put because of the looks I got but it all depends on were you are

Fbad_Maniac - I appreciate your feedback, and I'll be honest and say that at one point I was very materialistic and concerned with status. I then began reading more works/books about life by philosophers such as Seneca, and Aristotle, which completely changed my perspective on life. We all judge people by their actions, not the thoughts they say to themselves, there is no way for you to know my thoughts, and for you to think this, is something I can understand, as my actions do not follow through with my true thoughts. At the same time, many of us on this forum are "hustlers" and looking to succeed financially, and money is still a relatively new invention (when compared to the history of mankind), and you're technically chasing an object. But let me ask, have you ever worked for someone else? Have you ever traded your life's precious hours for another human being because you needed to earn more "currency?" People slave away their lives for forty years, saving up for an un-guaranteed "retirement", instead of living in the now You have one life, do you really want to waste it working un-necessarily for people who don't give a damn about you or I? Besides the freedom aspect, what do you want money for? Best of luck to you!


blackouts - Yes that might be the case for you, but then again most people don't act like this. Flashy stuff does actually increase age perception, I've been called 20-21 when I looked 16 because I was wearing a ton of flashy things* on. That was because I was wearing more than just the Rolex though, but flashy items do increase perception of age. Any how, I'm glad that you'd hire someone like me, I wish there were more people like you.

phil7346 - Yeah I actually had a fake one for 2 years and sold it a few months before I bought the real one. It was a blue Submariner, but the time stopped working on it so I stopped wearing it as much lol. I never wore it to business meetings because of that, and also because they might've been able to tell it was fake. And yeah the safety thing is a huge part that turns me off from it. I discovered that when I had the fake one too, and that's definitely one of the strongest arguments against wearing anything expensive, it comes with big risk, which is why it's definitely better to become the "millionaire next door" unless you know you live in a pretty safe area.

tony_d - To an extent, I do feel the need to justify myself. I'm a brand new user trying to start with a good reputation, and I've started with people already calling me out. If I was a bit more known in the forum, I'd probably ignore it, but for me to leave such big, genuine concerns unanswered would be suspicious to be honest. I don't want people thinking I'm CEOSam telling you how I made $360k or whatever he says in his videos. I know that people are going to negate my statements, and considering this is the Internet where I can make any claim I want without much reprimand, for anyone to not believe me is 100% understandable. I don't even trust a lot of posts by people who DO have rep etc, when they say they've made [insert amount here]. I'm not trying to come at you with BS claims so you can join some whatever BS and waste your time and possibly money. I posted a genuine question, and I should've just said "Should wearing status symbols such as Rolexes to meetings be worn to show success?" with a little elaboration below, but I posted it revolving it around me, perhaps subconsciously trying to brag (which is stupid of me and all hate is well-deserved in this case). If everyone was calling you a liar as soon as you began somewhere, when you 100% knew you weren't, wouldn't you, to at least some extent, have the desire to let people know what you're saying is true, rather than leaving doubt in their minds for any future thing you say?

Ever thought your client looks at your Rolex, assumes it is fake and then thinks you are a bullshitter. Or your client has a Ferrari and is not even interested in a Rolex.

Poor OP. I did like a lot of the responses though!

I can see what your thought process was regarding the watch and I do see it as a valid question.

My opinion is that you don't need the watch. I do feel like you should dress to certain standards when meeting a client but no need to do too much.

I'm only half joking, I've been in business for over a decade now and am very suspicious of expensive suits, in my limited experience the true tech gems are always a little shabby around the edges. Hell, when I first got into this industry clients almost seemed disappointed if I didn't turn up in Bermuda shorts!

My 'business suit' is clean black jeans (that are still black!) and a plain black tee shirt. I want my potential clients to be impressed with what's coming out of my gob, not my fashion sense.
