Should I fire my SEO guy?

But did he ever discuss broad, overall strategy? Did he describe various options, and how much each of them might cost, and what his opinion of the effectiveness of those options might be? If you went with the low-ball price, you shouldn't be surprised if you get less. It's important for the long-term relationship that everyone involved have some sense of "what's what". It's not fair to overbill a customer, then under-deliver. It's also not fair to expect first-rate service at bargain-basement prices. There's due diligence required here by both parties.

$200 doesn't buy much "hands-on" SEO time. How many hours do you think he actually spent "doing things", and how much did you pay him for those hours?

That's a good point. I haven't sent anything yet because I got busy at work. However, he did agree to provide first-class service for the amount negotiated. At least he offered 25 links per day of various kinds. That never happened as you can see the variety of link diversity isn't there.

How can you "fire" someone that you haven't paid?
I wouldn't be too impressed with him just because he is #1 for a particular keyword. Some kw's have no competition at all. WHICH kw is as important as where it ranks. Better to be #3 for a high-volume kw than #1 for a kw that has 300 searches per month. If the kw is competitive, his methods are almost certainly not white hat. Paying for large quantities of low-quality backlinks isn't even greyhat, it's black. Could result in an "unnatural profile" notice and possible penalty. Anchor text diversity will not save a site from punishment if G decides the links are spam. At best the links will be ignored, and at worst you could be deindexed forever.

Post penguin, I'd advise extreme caution. Much of what used to be good for getting rank will now get a site penalized. Is this site your primary source of income?

I've paid him for first and the second month, in advance of the month. This is now my primary source of income. The dude somehow guarantees that site won't get penalized and it has not happened to any of his clients in years of experience. Anchor diversity isn't there either, I gave him 4 keywords and he's been working on 2 out of 4 with no generic anchors to be found in the report I received. Maybe I should fire him just to save my site from getting de-indexed.

only doing directory submission in 30 days??? what kind of seo he is??? Most probably he is a fraud?

Get rid of him OP, also reevaluate your methods, they sound quite old.

He's charging you money for submission to 250 directories a month and they're not even auto approved? You could do that for free with a ton of free software in about 4 minutes AND have them be auto approved. Plus it sounds like he's bad on communication and dodgy. FIRE HIM! Also directory submission is very 2009 and should only be one very small part of your overall campaign. ANY person providing you with a SEO campaign and only building one type of link is worthless IMO unless you were hiring him just for one type of link to supplement a whole other SEO campaign.

in case you decided to fire him, for the next seo guy that you will hire, ask him about what is his plan and have it documented and ask for weekly if not monthly report. That way you can monitor the progress and see that he is really working.

Yeah, $200 is a clear indicator that the work is not going to be up to par. You should invest in someone from BHW, or use some BHW services. Don't worry about what'll happen if you fire him, just do it and tell him why. Act professionally and politely. Then hire some good Social Bookmarking+Web 2.0 services from the BST. Work from there.

I heard that SEO is just like the stock market. If you don't study and research, but instead hire some broker or mutual fund you will at best do ok, and at worst lose completely.

It's best to know what you want to accomplish, learn what it takes to do the job and hire people to do those specific tasks. Pay them by the job once the job is done, or half up front half when the job is done.

The services that he reported and as you are stating them on the thread, your site has a lot of potential to be penalized. If I were you I would just fire that guy right away. I also provide SEO services but I never did so lame things.

i think that you should build up your own strategy and then outsource parts of the work, like content creation. that way you wont be ripped off and you will be in control of your project.

He is seriously ripping you. Look for seo guys in the BST section. Their are lots of good seo guys out there

Given that the site is your primary source of income, I'll restate the comment. You need to exercise extreme caution with regard to backlinking. The Google Product forums are completely covered-up with webmasters, site-owners and SEO people looking for a way to get their site back in the rankings, reindexed, etc... Some people are paying to have (thousands) of spam backlinks removed. Removal rates can be on the order of 10%. Getting a spam site to remove a backlink is much more difficult than paying someone to run automated software to create it. Cutts himself has said that in some cases it will be less time-consuming to completely abandon a site rather than try to bring it back.

Hiring "just anyone" to do SEO on a site that is your primary source of income is what I would call "gambling with your rent money". You seem to have some knowledge of SEO, backlinking, etc... but not nearly enough to do it yourself, nor even to adequately supervise someone else. Note the primary focus of that supervision should not be to increase the site's SEO effectiveness, but instead should be to make certain the site doesn't get punished. Some of these punishments are permanent. I can't post links yet, but you should find the Google Products forum and read all the anecdotes of people getting their site penalized. Many stories start out just like yours. "I hired a guy that sounded like he knew what he was doing, and now my 5 year old site has gone from #4 to page 11 on my primary kw, and my income is less than 10% of what it used to be." The money you "saved" by hiring the cheap guy may cost you 100, 1000 times as much in lost income.

You should always prioritize SEO efforts in terms of least risky to more risky, and from least time consuming to most time consuming. Do the safest, fastest efforts first. Save the risk for later. It may not be necessary at all. Particularly post-Penguin, while you are safely getting your site ahead, your competition could be taking risks and getting themselves penalized.

For right now, I'd recommend you do nothing at all, until you either inform yourself adequately on what to do yourself, or you find the right person to do the SEO work for you. At this point, as Cliff Claven said, you are in a dog-eat-dog world, and are wearing milk-bone underwear.

On average, I email my clients almost daily. The lack of communication is and should be a major issue for a SEO paying client. Furthermore, he's not transparent, which is another huge issue and he provides obsolete techniques like directory submission. I wouldn't even be surprised if he was using automated scripts, probably not himself, but outsourcing the job. I don't know how much worse it could get...

I think he thinks that you dont know anything about SEO so you were a easy target for him,Get rid of him quick like everyone said. Find someone HONEST that actually cares about your ranks

It started with me not having enough time... not because business is good, it's because I can't hire someone at my business so I'm one man show. I'm doing my work here and it seem to give me more satisfaction outsourcing pieces but I will need guidance and time, which I don't have.

I think that's the best course of action given my situation.

I thought that's exactly what I was doing by hiring a proper SEO company.

Some people are paying to have (thousands) of spam backlinks removed.
I would not want to be in that position because I simply won't be able to afford it.

I do have the core of SEO understood for a long time. I've had success for about 10 years. Have owned a network of forums with over 300,000 members when forums were hot. Lack of time has led me here. There is another reason why I'm desperate. There are two competitors in my industry that are dirty, they have been around longer than I have and they all have their sites to the top when it was easy to do with google. I suppose Penguin has not arrived in this niche/country yet because they are still at the top, all keywords, taking ALL business while I'm suffering. I provide way better service than those guys. I know because I have done my competition analysis including calling them up and talking to them. Some of their clients have spoken about how bad they are as well. Reality is, they are on the top while I'm getting my business from google PPC - expensive as hell but keeps me afloat.

For right now, I'd recommend you do nothing at all, until you either inform yourself adequately on what to do yourself, or you find the right person to do the SEO work for you. At this point, as Cliff Claven said, you are in a dog-eat-dog world, and are wearing milk-bone underwear.
I have a problem with trusting people, this time I did trust this guy and it seems like it was a bad idea. How does someone with trust problem find a good SEO person?

I did pretend that I didn't know much about SEO so I would gain most from his knowledge.
