Should I be using webmaster tools?

I've always found it to be helpful. It's good for pointing out any crawls errors or other mistakes. Google will know what you're doing anyway, you're heardly damaging yourself.

I would stay from WMT if I'm gonna be using BH techniques :D
 
I use it, I'm not really into bh stuff though. It's useful for submitting sitemaps.
 
It depends. If you're white-hat, you can use GWT to manually submit links/blog posts and have them indexed almost immediately. It's also incredibly helpful to look at what's going on with your site behind the scenes. If you're black-hat, you might as well lick a fork and stick it in the power outlet.
 
I've never had any issues with WMT. Just don't have all your sites on one account where they can all be linked together. If you are doing things properly then WMT will help you out more than anything. The trick is to "look" as natural as possible.
 
Google already has all the info available on WMT, all signing up does is make that info available to you..
 
I wouldnt panic to hard about using WMT, you get some very useful info and more importantly you see what info google has to work with and if you spam the hell out your site they will even tell you ;)
 
GWT only shows you the information they already know, so don't worry about it harming you or getting yourself penalised. It provides some very useful information. So take advantage of it!!
 
You are not giving any extra information to google by using gwt (except the 'owner' of the website). You will be aware of when your site receive a penalty.

However the danger IMO is that you are linking all your sites together and when of your sites get a penalty, it might trigger a review for all websites that are linked to that gwt account.
They can also classify you as blackhatter and decrease the ranking of your websites automatically. Well this one is just an assumption but it plausible. We know that google is paranoid.
 
You are going to get different answers as would be expected. Decide for yourself whether or not you should be using it. Remember though, whether or not you use it, your linking profile is already known to Google.
