Hi, I am just starting SEO. With mobile first indexing, should I focus primarily on mobile optimization, or is desktop still important for new sites?

What is a practical approach for beginners with limited time and resources?

Depends on the seo work you do.
For example consider affiliate offers you are promoting on a site. First find out the buyer device information from the affiliate page of the offers. If the buyers are 80% desktop then desktop first else mobile first if the 80% are on mobile.

Go mobile first, no question. That’s what Google mainly uses now, so your site should load fast, look clean, and work smoothly on phones.

That said, don’t ignore the desktop. It still matters for users and conversions, especially in some niches.

If you’re short on time, keep it practical: use a simple responsive theme, focus on speed, clean layout, and readable content on mobile. If it works well on mobile, the desktop usually falls into place.

Focus on mobile - you'll get more real traffic, web traffic contains more bots as well it's easier from start to work with mobile traffic.

Prioritize mobile it's where most real users are. Desktop traffic often brings more bots, and mobile is simpler to scale early on.

The internet is currently 60-76 percent mobile
Especially with third worlds
So mobile been first is the way

Why not just go for a responsive design ? A responsive design can work seamlessly across all devices, thereby it ensures your mobile site has the same content and structured data as your desktop version.
In my experience, Google focuses primarily on the mobile version of a website for ranking purposes.
Not a bad idea to use Google Search Console for checking the "Mobile Usability" report and then working it up from there if needed.

However, which method to use depends on the work you're doing. If you don't have a specific direction yet, prioritize mobile first because Google uses mobile-first indexing. Google currently ranks websites based on their mobile versions, and the majority of traffic comes from mobile devices. Users primarily search on mobile, especially for popular niches (news, shopping, lifestyle, etc.).

It depends on your audience. Which device do they use more?

Focus on mobile first since Google uses it for indexing, but don’t ignore desktop completely. For beginners, keep it simple: fast loading, clean design, and content that works well on both.

Go mobile-first since that’s what Google uses, but make sure desktop still looks clean. For beginners, focus on speed, simple design, and content that’s easy to read on any device.

if it runs smooth on mobile it’ll usually be fine on desktop too so prioritize mobile but keep everything balanced.

Mobile should be your main focus since Google uses mobile-first indexing. Make sure your site loads fast, is responsive, and easy to use on smaller screens.
That said, don’t ignore desktop completely , just ensure it works smoothly. A simple approach is to design for mobile first, then adjust for desktop.

practical approach for beginners
It really comes down to what you’re building, but if you’re unsure, it makes more sense to focus on the mobile experience first. These days, search engines mostly look at how your site performs on phones. Since most people now browse and search on their phones, making sure your site works seamlessly on mobile means you’re already reaching the largest share of your audience.
