    Hello,

I heard sharing URL's on social media sites helps SEO and indexing.

Does it matter that i'm sharing my websites URL's on social media through bit.ly using the domain shortener option?

I have a custom domain aside from my normal one for sharing on social media.

Will the links shared (short domain) still help with SEO on my main domain?

    Thanks,

You can try sub domains in the social medias it can be useful to indexing your sites.

Every redirect diminishes the value of the backlink... Cutts said each redirect has the same cost as an additional nested layer of linking. Which would mean that a single redirect has a cost of something steep like a third of the page rank the link would have otherwise transferred. Best to avoid if possible.

Sharing shortened links has both advantage and disadvantage.

The advantage is the user can shorten the big URLs with a series of letters and numbers which is more comfort while posting.

And the disadvantage is some persons consider that it is a spam link while seeing it in the post. Because of the non predictable link.

Conclusion: User friendly, but considered as spam by other users.

Destination url shortener, so that your domain is not blocked facebook

If you share a lot of spam to fanspage, google can not be identified because it was not dublikat content

Actually, that's one of the longest running myths regarding SEO and social signals.

In terms of direct benefit, there is very little evidence to show that getting a lot of social signals in of itself will raise your rankings on Google search results.

With that said, you still need to get lots of social signals, why?

    They form circumstantial evidence.

What I mean by this is there's a high likelihood that people do share your content organically on social media websites.

A certain percentage of those people might share it with the right people who then would link to you.

It's the actual links that get you rank higher, not the actual sharing.

I hope you can see the difference here.

Still, there's a little bit of a chicken or egg dilemma here because the more you get shared, the higher the likelihood that somebody with a blog would link to you.

They kind of go hand in hand.

Still, it doesn't make much sense to just automatically assume that just because you have a lot of social signals, that in of itself will mean you will do well.

Also, I would not use redirect links like Bit.ly.

Instead, if I had to use redirect links, use Google's redirect links.

I have over 150 million facebook fans across all my properties... I've tried every way possible to leverage likes for SEO advantage... it just isn't a thing with google. If 150 million likes can't move the needle on a no competition keyword then it just isn't wired to work that way.

BUT... for certain types of searches having social accounts and features integrated on the page does correlate strongly with rankings. Its not all keywords... it seems like it is turned on for specific product categories in my world.

If the shortener just does 1 (301) re-direct (It passes page rank) - Matt Cutts said, that if you have more then 2 redirects to a page (google might not crawl that page)
