VPS is better, just takes more effort in setting up your LAMP stack(or what platform/technologies you plan to use), and requires a bit more tech knowledge than just buying a web host package.

what if what? you'll have a shared plan now and a vps next year.
if you're not confident what you're doing, go with shared plan. you can always upgrade and migrate your data to vps in the future.

Why everybody recommending Cpanel? That's for sysadmin newbies.
If you can handle Apache2 or nginx by youself don't overfload the server with Cpanel. Seriously, Cpanel for 5 websites makes me laugh!
Use a VPS as you've a dedicated IP. With shared hosting usually you don't have but you could get one. VPS also allow you more freedom to do stuff usually you would have to pay like issue a free SSL certificate with Let's Encrypt.
If your provider is cool you can send images to install the VPS, if that's the case you've images with the webserver + mysql + PHP, etc already prepared for you. Just upload, edit the sites-enabled at webserver, upload WP, create databases and you're good to go.

If you are using shared, make sure any sites that share an IP address aren't spammers. I had a friend that had an issue with SEO due to other sites on the same IP address dragging down his authority.

If you are just starting out a shared plan will be better as it will be managed.
VPS is always better if you know how to set it up or if you are willing to go manage on it then I would go managed.

If you are using wordpress use easyengine, its easiest way to setup a site on a linux vps.

No it isn't. If you need to install something then it isn't the easiest way. You can get it faster with a shell script like the following:

So you just need to install the VPS using a proper image and everything is installed (nginx/apache, php and extensions, mysql) then you execute a script that like. That's the easiest and fastest way!
