Hello,

my hosting company said my vps is detroyed due to power outage.
Does anybody know if the data can get restored as I made no backups (oh my)?

Thanks for helping me out!

Depending on your setup is it managed or unmanaged? Did you get a RAID configuration on it? Most days everyone uses software raid which is harder to do disaster recovery. Ask them if there is a RAID array on it. Most hosting companies will not help you with disaster recovery if it is managed which it probably is being a pooled VPS with other customers.

Thanks so much for your help and reply!!!

It is a managed VPS.

They said they had a power outage and they can not recover it.

What company is it? Seems as if they have no RAID configuration setup or they don't care to go through the recovery process and rebuild the array. A simple power outage should not wipe out your data. The worst that should happen is that the data being written during the power outage would be lost but not all of your data. What a shame

Happened to us on a local shitty datacenter, they said nothing could be done. Fortunately we had backups on AWS. Otherwise a lot of customer data would have been lost.

Thanks so much for helping - really! Totally stressing out here.

Undergroundprivate it is. They said that they can not recover it and they asked what OS I preferred.
So, will my data still be on it?

Oh god, from now I will back up everything daily, seriously, I am so fucking stupid.

If they're saying it's gone, it's gone.

Really strange they don't have their own backups of customer data; perhaps they do and are too lazy to restore each individual.

How long were you with them?

For years, and I have had always good experiences with them. On their TOS it is said that clients are responsible for their own backups. So fucking stupid of me.

Ah! In that case- an expensive lesson learned.

On the bright side, when you go through something like this you'll never forget to do it again.

For me this language is all abracadabra and simsalabim.

Yup data is gone, they will be of no help.

If what you are doing can afford it, I recommend going with bare metal servers and hiring a private server manager. It can be pricey but this way you will have full control of the server and data. Or just religiously do backups

Heartbreaking, but an expensive lesson, at least. F EWFJOWEIF WJIO UCK.

Data loss is a lesson everyone will pay to learn sooner or later.

If your server provider says it can't restore then it is what it is.

Learn your lesson and set up a back up system for your future projects.

Thanks for advice and clarification.

How can data be gone because of a power outage?

Data can be recovered, the question is, will the hosting company do it? Probably not. It takes time, resources and money. Data recovery services have been around for decades. If you aren't some big client they'll probably just ignore it and blame you because you haven't made a backup.

Lesson learned, from now on you will definitely start taking regular backups.

Depending what kind of website it is, you can possibly looking at pulling data from waybackmachine. Not sure why no one here has recommended it yet, but it won't help with everything else only really articles etc.

Yes, I am aware of this option, pff. Thanks for your recommendation though.

They may be able to but unwilling to, and since the VPS is just a small slice shared on a server with many others they won't send you the storage media for you to recover. If you don't maintain local copies of your data and whatever you post if it is a blog or something like that, or perform database backups routinely, you're SOL unfortunately. If it was a dedicated bare-metal server or one you colocated, then yeah, you'd have plenty of potential recovery options on the table.

Because their infrastructure is shit or they are too lazy to do disaster recovery. After working years in datacenters as an engineer, I can tell you data loss is extremely easy to prevent.
