Just a rant.

I read a lot of blogs and forums to keep up with the SEO world, learn new things, and make sure I don't miss any big updates or anything.

One that I have read a lot and never ceases to amaze me with its stupidity and blind worship of everything Matt Cutts says is MOZ (formerly SEOMoz).

After reading the latest post, entitled "7 Reasons to Remove 'Link-Building' from our Vocabulary" I have had enough. I will not be reading this piece of **** blog anymore.

All they ever talk about is "write great content and users will come by themselves," "link building doesn't even help anymore," "Google is constantly attacking webspam and making its results better and better."

It's like they're living in LaLa Land. Have they not seen that the most competitive niches are still dominated by blackhat tactics? Do they not realize they could get Ernest Hemingway to guest blog for them and without linking and promoting the site, NOBODY WOULD EVER SEE IT.

So to all of the dweebs and marketing visionaries at SEOMoz, get a life, stop swallowing Google's nonsense like it's magic juice from the fountain of youth, and BE GONE from my life.

Yeah, I agree with you. It's very much in Corporate SEO land.

Still worth an occasional visit as you can pick up some nuggets there.

MOZ is actually pretty good in my book. I mean all I do is spam or create backlinks which is why I know what they are talking about when it comes to penalty. I already understand that my techniques will not last long and they will only give me a year worth of money. White hat sites work really well especially if you invest a lot of time and money on it.

I thought about making a white hat site with 10k+ of good content instead of doing blackhat but one thing stopped me from creating a very good white hat site which is scrapers.
I don't want to keep putting out DMCA requests and keep on emailing google to blacklist some scraper sites. There is no way to stop them. They get hosting in some unknown country and register there too. It is going to be a pain to create a lawsuit to stop them. I may as well create thin affiliate sites and use blackhat techniques.

However, if there is a way to stop scrapers. I would have created a white hat site and use all the info that MOZ is providing.

I know - and the truth is they're usually the first to post when there is some big Google update. It's hard to remove it from my usual blogs list for that reason but everything else is just sooooooo bad.

There the bastard child of Matt Cutts, the rubbish they suggest is laughable. I errr.. long since sacked the idea that they know what there talking about, in a word "fuck em" (adjusts my black hat proudly)

Well, that's probably because they target steady, long-run, sometimes real-life, sometimes mom-and-pop, sometimes bigger (etc etc) businesses and try to give them advice how to connect with their visitors etc. MOZ and BlackHat doesn't go together.

BTW I too have read that article and I can relate to some of those statements, such as don't use links as your benchmark, but try to focus on your visits, ROI etc. But overall everything technical mentioned in that article will not become valid in less than 2 or 3 years.. or even maybe more.

So start your link-building-engines, ready, set - go!

Also one more thing - remember that MOZers are selling their SEO/IM services so it is more than natural they will publish these types of articles in order to put them in "leader of the market" and "know it all" positions. But these articles are intended for failing inhouse SEOs from those mom-and-pop companies, not for you, not for us.

Where was your opening <rant> tag? Haha just joking.

Yes I understand where you are coming from. One reason they could be doing it is to attract more attention to themselves. Most sources of SEO content on the internet are just hammering how important link building is and people know that usually entails a lot of hard work.

Then if one blog, that is also an authority in the niche says 'you can rank and get all the traffic to your site without building any links!' Suddenly they get all the attention of people that want to stop link building (or stop paying for an SEO service) and look for an easy way out.

I think deep down they know what they are writing is a load of old s*i* but it keeps the visitors coming and their wallets full, so will never change.

Their tools are good (not worth the price they are asking though) but unfortunately, they are in googles pocket. Some of the info about onpage seo is ok but everything else on there is basically the same stuff you will find on WF

Considering the WWW is built with links as it's very core structure / nature (think about the word "web") it really is incredibly silly to make a statement like "forget about backlinks" that's a bit like advising people that to tell people directions to your shop - don't bother sending them a map! FFS. Or that road signs no longer work because Satnav has taken over.

No offense Op but if you dont know how important it is to have great content for last 2 years, you are far behind the trends.

Of course I know great content is important - I pay American copywriters lots of money for my money site content. My gripe with MOZ is the blissful ignorance they broadcast about every other aspect of SEO... This whole post is half-joking. Moz talks about search engine trends which largely, over time, will probably be realized. But there's a lot of, as other users put it, mom and pop oriented feel-good articles.

Pretty much the same with a lot of SEO blogs, they create content for the sake of creating content. Sure some has to be aimed at "new" people to the industry but little SEO blogs offer awesome, insightful help content. Especially when they try and churn out posts everyday. Why bother when the content is not needed? It is a pointless task.

Yup Fishkind's apostles have been saying the same garbage for years. Never been right. They convince themselves that the world of SEO is "other than it is".
You can find posts from these people going back years saying the exact same thing over and over.
It's like the parable of the "Emporers New Clothes" All proclaiming how frikking fantastic the last update was, what a brilliant change it made

They keep such a high level of self delusion going that it is almost mania

Then someone pops and has a look in serps for highly commercial terms and sees the cheapest of cheap links winning every fucking battle their is. Sape footer and tag links alone on sites that bear zero relevance to the subject they are supporting getting the target site a top 3 position in Google despite being full of spun unreadable content and having nothing other than the crappiest and most irrelevant of paid footer link to support it. This is for really commercial terms, tens of thousands of uniques a month and a couple of grand a month income potential per site in many cases (US$)

Try telling these deluded pricks that though and suddely it's eyes closed, fingers in ears and shouting "Not listening" at the tops of their voices.

Scritty

I agree with you mate, they will be perfect in white hat seo but they don't know what bhw seo can do they can't....

There is a lot of bull but I don't agree fully what you say about cheap links still rocking it in high competitive commercial terms. Big brands are dominating which have very natural "white hat" links that no cheapest of cheap links can contend with.

Sure some niches are dominated full of spammy sites with spun content and terrible links but they don't rank long term. Just look at paydayloans as an example. The cost of ranking is HIGH, the return can be HIGH but short lived.

I thought I was the only one who thought seomoz is the cheeziest "seo" site out there.

One warning: seomoz and their owner are in bed with matt cutts and google. If you analyze your sites there and give them your personal info, and you accidentally happen to outrank some of their own staff sites(not difficult ;) ) or you offer any challenge to google's "good for google bad for you 'quality' guidelines", seomoz will hand your head to google in a platter.
